So my neighbor just purchased a new Panasonic 50" plasma, and he has a samsung upconversion player. They tried to sell him a $150 surge supressor, I told him to wait and let me ask you guys so he will get the most bang for the buck. He just wants basic surge supression, so how much does he need to spend? What type of specs do we need to look for, how much protection do you really need? We live in the Country in KY, so no blackouts. I didn't want to lie to him, so thats why I am here. If you want to just refer me to another thread or website I am perfectly cool with it.

Thanks again

Hi. Here is a thread on some APC units that you might find of interest. I have a Belkin and am happy with it, and I also have a Panamax that never gave me any trouble.

What unit did they want to sell him for $150, if you know?

A simple 60.00 Tripplite Isobar will do exactly what he needs.

Sounds like a good quality surge protector would suffice. Go with something like the APC C5 or C3 which can be had for less than $60. :)
I got the H15 and it might have been a little overkill but I like it. :D

Sorry it took me so long to get back and answer the questions guys, it's been a heck of a week. I'm not sure what they were trying to sell him, I know it had battery back up, which he doesn't need. He has a TV and a DVD player, not too hard to reset everything if you have to, that and I am his neighbor and can do it in a bout 3 min if I have to.

I will read what you posted a bit later, and I will pass on those rec.'s. I'm sure he will be much happier about spending $60.

An UPS is only NEEDED for lamp displays/projectors, and hard drives (PC's, DVR's, etc.).

Panamax, Furman, Tripp-Lite, etc. make some good surge protection. I would look towards the better Furman and APC line for power conditioning.
