Welcome to the forum!

Most turntables require an additional stage of amplification on their signal compared to other components (e.g. tape decks, dvd players). If your turntable doesn't include that amplification, then you'd need your receiver to do it (baring getting another piece of equipment). Does your Sony have a "PHONO" input? If so, are you using it?

Aha! Unless your turntable has a built in amp, then that's the reason. See my other post above.

That receiver is not compatible with a record player without a phono amplifier. RadioShack may still make them, it should be rather inexpensive, but it won't be of the highest grade of quality.

Not sure how to detect if your TT has an amp in it or not; many do not.

As to your other question, you can easily pick up a phono stage on AudiogoN. I just bought a NAD PP2 for $85 shipped, and it works fine (my TT setup is pretty modest, but it sounds pretty good). Poke around over there and see what you find.

I did a quick look around the internet for your turntable, and none of the descriptions that I could find mention having an amplified output. I'm guessing that it does not have one. Your correct, too, that your receiver doesn't have a PHONO input (I finally found a good photo).

Something like this from Crutchfield should work for you, but I've never researched these things. Hopefully someone else here can chime in.

what i think i want to do is just return the sony thing i got and buy a amplifier so its an all in one, any that anybody would suggest for under 160 and below

I think you are getting a tad confused. Allow me to explain.

The Sony receiver will work fine, all you need to do is add the Phone Pre-amp to the setup and it will work fine. By connecting the turntable to the preamp and in turn connecting the pre-amp to any input on the receiver you will get what you needed.

Now, if you don't like the Sony receiver and would rather just get a different receiver that has a Phono input, I guess that would work as well. I suppose you could return Sony for a full refund since you just bought it.

It is strange, I searched on their site for Phono and I didn't get that. I also searched for pre amp, and still didn't get it.:( I hate their search thing.
I searched for "phono" and got it. You just need patience in sorting through the results, my friend. :)

I did sort through it, about 3 times. I just got a bunch of Phono plugs and adapters.
