Supercube II or ???

I have an opportunity to purchase a supercube II and am setting up a new system. The fronts will be Mythos ones and center is Mythos eight. It is a 5.1 system and will have inceiling UIW 83's for rear surrounds. The price on the sub is pretty good ($300), but absent the price consideration, am I going to be happy with it? Home theater is set up in open basement area that has been finished off and has carpet flooring. Approx 800 SQ ft of open area with TV area set up around on corner area. Thanks for any insight and suggestion of alternatives.

Save some cash, go with the 63s. Nothing less than an SC I for the sub, but for your large space I'd look elsewhere. If you can swing it, the Epik Sentinel on sale is an excellent choice. http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/products.html

Thanks for the heads up. The I stumbled on someone who has 2 pair of 83's never installed. I am buying one pair for $250 which is almost the same price as the 63's. Does this still make sense then? I got your note on the sub, I will do so more research, but is there a review done by anyone for subs under $1k?

Nothing wrong with the 83s in that case. Don’t know of an under $1K sub comparo, but if it were my money the subs I’d be considering in order would be:

What distinguishes why one would chose the sealed vs. ported Sub? How does the sub perform for music vs. movies

Ported subs will play louder and lower but roll off sharply below the tuning frequency. Properly designed, they have excellent sound quality. Sealed subs are easier to build but need eq and more power to get good output at the lowest frequencies. Sealed subs tend to use smaller cabinets, making them more decor-friendly. Many commercial ported subs have issues with port noise at higher output as a consequence of using too small a port to save $$$.

Ported subs have a big advantage for movies over most sealed subs because the port enhances output and extension. I don't think there is much a difference with music as long as we only consider well-designed subs.
