There is a Sunfire Theater Grand I on ebay for 599. I have read that the TGIII got bad reviews, but that the TGII was better. I did not read anything about the TGI. Is this a good deal?

Would that not be significantly out of date? No DPL II or IIx support, only 2 component inputs, no on-screen menu, very limited setup options (I think it even has a fixed crossover, but I'm not certian), no video upconversion...

It's simply an older model, and with that comes lack of features that are all but standard these days. However, if it meets your needs and you've always wanted the Sunfire name in your living room then perhaps it's a good buy.

If you want a pre/pro for the $599 range perhaps the Emotiva UL would be worth a look.

I was also looking at that. This just caught my eye on ebay. I am still trying to decide between spending about $1k on a reciever or pre/pro/amp. Alot of the recievers that I see have features that I would probably not use. I am thinking that I will get better sound from a dedicated amplifier like the Emotiva UL. If this is wrong please tell me because this is my first HT set-up.
Thanks

Pete,

As someone who purchased an AVR within the last year I can tell you that if I had it to do over again, I would go with separates. I do not use the switching capability of my Denon (3805) and will soon be using this AVR as a pre amp. But with a $1,000 budget, an AVR might be a better choice. Denon, Yamaha and Marantz all have good products for $1K or less (quite a bit less if you don't mind B stock).

That is good to know. I was looking at the 3805 or something similar. I will probably not be using any type of video switching because 1) my tv has more inputs than I have sources and 2) i prefer to run video direct to my tv anyway. I think that I will try to get the Emotiva UL seperates. My only concern is if the 3805 would make a better pre/pro than the Emotiva. I am pretty sure the seperate amp would be better. I just want something that produces good quality sound without all the extras, like 653 DSP modes, etc.
Thanks
Pete

Another option

If you would like to use the processing of a Denon along with a separate amp, you might consider one of models below the 3805. Most of the features are the same, the main difference from model to model is amp power.

1905......$450.......80W
2105......$650.......90W
2805......$900......100W
3805.....$1000......120W

Prices from crutchfield.com

For the money, the 3805 is an excellent buy. A unit of this caliber may be just what you need and keep you satisfied for many years to come.

BTW, what speakers make up your system.

you must take a close look at the Yamaha V2500. a very good amp and a shade better than the denon 3805, so i think
