Suggestions on replacement for Snell C2 speakers?

Hi folks,

I have had a pair of Snell-cII speakers as my main speakers (in 7 channel setup) for almost 15 years. They've been great, and still sound awesome.

The sound is so "natural", that with music or directv sources, my wife and I often get up to answer the phone, when we then realize it's actually in the soundtrack of what we're watching. Pretty amazing actually.

In any case, I've finally decided that we need speakers that are a bit sleeker (less wide in particular - these things are beasts).

I'm looking for suggestions.

Speakers for maybe $2-3k or thereabouts that won't be so drastically different in "tone" that they work against my center channel for example.

Any suggestions??? Brands and/or models to check out?

New is ok but used might also work if they're not THAT old.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Steve

That is a blast from the past.

Speaker technology has changed a lot since 1989.

Snell speakers where always quite nicely voiced. So you will have to choose carefully if you don't want buyers remorse. The original MRSP of your speakers was $1890 a pair so the upper end of your price range may still be a little on the low side.

Are you using a sub by the way?

What speakers are available to audition in your area?

I think if you are replacing speakers of that quality an audition or home trial is a must.

Boston VS 344 floor standers and Boston VS 224 for the center.
Do not let the name Boston fool you - this is the real deal. This
will keep you in bidget.

Honestly I wouldn't try to match the center. You'd be better off replacing the front three with something up to date. That way there are a lot of good choices open to you. Do you have a good subwoofer?

bidget is suppose to be budget - sorry!
Do not get the VS mixed up with the RS
VS is the high end, and RS is the mid-level.

You asked about the sub. I have a definitive tech powerfield 15 I think. It's great.

And for center I have also a def. tech something or other (it's quite good). It voiced better with the snells, than the snell center speaker I tried oddly.

I live in the boston area so there are lots of places to listen to speakers. But that's the problem - there are TOO many choices!

Thanks for the input so far.

Interesting.

My center isn't nearly as old as the snells (it's a def tech. and is quite good).

My sub is a definitive pf15 I think and it's also quite good.

Hi,

the VS344 looks VERY interesting. I can tell you that it would be PERFECT size-wise.

How do they sound?

I've got to find out where I can see them and hear them, but boy do these look interesting, if the sound quality isn't going to detract in my system.

Anyone who's heard them??

My statement about replacing the front 3 was based on all three being Snell and the center impossible to match. You could always contact DefTech and ask them what they recommend to go with the center. Or you could contact Jim Salk about bulding you a set of Song Towers and a matching Song Center (review). I'm sure there are a few happy customers in your area that will let you listen to theirs.

The sound quality will not detract - I find them more balanced and
clean sounding than the Snell speakers. And Snell is good - I like the
tweeter in the Boston speaker. These speakers are very musical and
dynamic with home theater. You should match the front 3 speakers.
This will really bring things to life - it will draw your attention.

Cool. Thanks for the thoughts. I'll see if I can track some down for a listen.
