Suggestions for Yamaha r-v902

I have a Yamaha r-v902 which was replaced by a Yamaha RX-V659. I am thinking about giving it to my son who is a Major in the Air Force, but am not sure how much use it will be to him. He lives in an apartment and has a 36" Westinghouse LCD, a Toshiba HD A2 player, a VCR-DVD combo, and two PSB Alpha speakers that I gave him. He is on HD cable.

Would this be of any use to him or do I just let it sit in a box?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

What is he using now for a receiver? If he doesn't have one, then this would be quite useful.

He would probably still want to connect video from the HD-DVD player to the LCD directly because the R-V902 only has composite video inputs. However, he could connect the L/R analog audio outputs from both the HD-DVD and DVD/VCR to the R-V902 - after all, he only has two speakers to hook up to it.

I think that a $200 (from Amazon) Onkyo TX-SR506...or most any modern low-priced receiver...would be better than this, so if it's going to cost a lot to ship it to him, then I think it would be better to get him one of those instead.

Thanks for the info. He does not have a receiver now and has connected the player as you suggested. He will be home for Christmas and I was going to give him the receiver then, so shipping is not a problem. You make a great suggestion about a new receiver, but with his assignment and a 3-year old at home, he doesn't have much time to watch a movie or tv so I will probably just give him the 902 for now. I have a Yamaha RX-V659,
Paradigm Monitor 3s for mains, Paradigm CC370, Paradigm PDR-10 Sub, Axiom QS8 surrounds and Hitachi 50" Ultravision which I will replace when it finally dies.
Thanks again for your good input.
