Hello guys,

After being a long time reader of this forum, I decide to take a step forward and build myself a HT system instead of purchase simple solutions like Bose systems :D. However, months of reading without any practical experience and sufficient comprehensive knowledge of HT, the whole “build myself a system thing” has become very frustrating .

All in all, what I really want is a 5.1 surround sound system with the intention to spend 80% of the time on movies and 20% on music. Since I am still in the apartment rental phase of my life, I have my majority of interests in Hi-definition projector system with potentials to upgrade :p. I have put together a few items myself and hope you guys can give me some pointers and things I should pay attention to.

Projector: Optoma H31 (720p)
Receiver: JVC RX-D702B (720p)
DVD player: OPPO OPDV971H (720p)
Speaker: (Recommendation needed)

My budget is around $2,500 and apartment living means that I can’t really push the volume too high. I have no idea what sort of speaker suits me the best. In addition to that, my living room space is usually limited as the studios around the town usually run about 450 to 550 sq. ft. and 500-650 sq. ft. for one bed room. Any constructive criticisms or suggestions will be fully noted. Thank you in advance.

Best suggestion for speaker buying is to go try out all the kinds you can find and pick your own.

Everyone here has a a**hole and opinions range as many as there are a**holes here.
Some may like wide ones, some small ones, some medium ones, some hairless ones some bald and so fourth, get my drift?????

Just My Opinion But since your in a smaller apartment right now I'd look into the SVS SBS-01 5.1 Set with PB10-NSD $999, or SBS-01 7.1 Set with PB10-NSD $1,149. Since your 80% movies then music, I think this would fit the bill perfectly.

Thanks for the advice guys and I really appreciated it. I am also wondering whether DLP technology matters all that much? Given that Optoma HD72 has a huge price gap after H31. I really want to know more about the difference between these two units. Can someone explain whether or not I will need a DLP projector to archive ultimate viewing result in small apartment?

Speaker system for apt.

The SVS system is a good option for HT listening and well under your budget, however, you won't be able to take full advantage of the SVS sub in your apartment (without getting evicted).

You have lots of options in your budget. You might consider a system with large bookshelf speakers or floorstander mains that play down to the 30-40 Hz range and hold off on the sub for a while. Check out the internet direct products from Axiom Audio, Ascend, and Onix Rocket (av123.com). At local B&M dealers look for Paradigm (studio series), PSB, and others.

I tried to dig out more information about B&M speakers, its 600 series in conjunction with a center speakers seen to be very promising. It occurs to me that I only need two fronts and one center to create enough sound for me in a studio. And judging from B&M website information, I can later purchase a sub and two rear speakers to make it truly surround sound. Is this a logical way to take? I mean, I am saving up for a house and I am pretty sure if I kick in a sub in a studio right now, I would get evicted sooner or later. In addition to that, except the company website it appears to me they have no on-line vendor who carries their product. Anyone got any tips?

If your going to go 2-channel with no sub, take a look at these.
