Suggested crossover frequency?

My speaker system is a set of 5 Niles Audio DS8300AT Directed Soundfield ceiling speakers with 8" woofers and frequency response of 35Hz - 22kHz. They are matched with an SVS 25-31 PC-Plus subwoofer.

I have had my crossover set to 80 Hz for quite some time; would 60 Hz (or some other setting) be better? I know it is ultimately up to my ears to decide, but I am looking for input from all of you knowledgeable people.

Thanks!

I'd suggest 80Hz, but you can experiment with a lower crossover setting to see if you prefer it slightly lower, assuming all your speakers can accommodate.

From my own experience with my 20-39 PCi and Boston Acoustics VR3 mains that go down to an fairly accurate 35Hz, I'd say the SVS is likely to be better at handling bass between 40-80Hz than most speakers, but as I mentioned, you can always experiment, see what you think and go from there. As long as the speakers can handle it, it boils down to a personal preference at that point... -TD

I have had good results with 60Hz myself so give it a try for a month then switch back to 80Hz and see if you notice a difference. It has been my personal experience that if there is a noticable difference your more likely to notice it going backwards to 80Hz after a month of 60Hz than you would on the initial change from 80 to 60. This may not nessessarily be a logical statement but it's one I've personally found to be accurate.

try 80... that's the standard place to start!
