Suddenly No Sound or Picture Through TV and AVR

Hi All,

I'm looking for help troubleshooting an issue that is baffling me. Please let me know if this is not the best place to post this and if so, where would be a better spot for it.

TV: LG OLED 77" C3 2023
AVR: Denon X3800H

ISSUE: About a week ago, suddenly, ARC between my AVR and my TV stopped working. And by "stopped working" I mean that other devices could no longer control my AVR. I'd turn on my PS5 before and automatically the TV and AVR would turn on together and also if I turned my PS5 off, both the TV and AVR would shut off at the same time. Same thing with Apple TV, if I turned the Apple TV off, the TV and AVR shut down together, now only the TV would shut off while the AVR did nothing. Additonally, the using the Apple TVs remote to turn the volume up and down no longer worked.

Otherwise, the audio and picture were still just fine it was just odd that the AVR suddenly stopped communicating in the same way with my other devices.

To troubleshoot, I decided to remove power from both the TV and the AVR. I turned everything back on, noticed that on my TV that "Sound Out" was set to "TV Speakers" so I switched that back to HDMI-ARC. Then turned on the Apple TV and could hear it but not see the display. Also I cannot see the menu of the AVR like I usually can.

Then, I turned the TV on and off and now I'm just not getting anything. No audio, no video, nothing.

I'm completely baffled because this has worked fine for the last 10 months or so that I've had both devices. And it all seems pretty basic to me, HDMI is plugged in tight to the ARC port on the AVR (just like it always was) and then plugged into to HDMI 2 on the TV (just like always) but now...I'm just not getting anything.

Most of what I've found online is power cycling (which I did), and just making sure the cables are plugged into the correct input (which they are and always were)

Any troubleshooting steps would be appreciated!

It’s a real inconvenience but you might try resetting the TV to Initial settings and see if that works. My C1 freaks out occasionally and I’ve had to reset it a few times.

I don't ever use the HDMI control for one remote to dominate so hard to comment on that (I use universal remotes or just each individual remote otherwise if needed). I turn HDMI control off as I don't like ARC as it just has issues with the various implementations allowed by various brands. Sometimes a real cold reset can help (i.e. unplugging from power as otherwise still in standby....not sure you've done that with everything....and if you have then actual full factory/microprocessor resets if available could be in order).

Hm, okay did a factory reset, same issues. I realized I do actually seem to be getting audio but not video. I swapped the HDMI cable from HDMI 2 and tried HDMI 1 instead (on the TV) and Monitor 1 on the AVR. Same issue.

Is there anything sort of nooby you all can think of? Like something I could have accidentally clicked on my AVR remote?

Okay figured it out. It was the HDMI cable. Weird because literally before I power cycled my TV it was still producing video. But once I swapped out the cable for a different one, all the issues resolved, including the original ARC issue I was having. That cable is less than a year old too.

Anyways, thanks all for the help!

Cables can fail. Have only had one of a dozen do so over as many years.
