and if it's a powered sub (and your bass managment is set up), it will take some of the strain off the reciever, or power amplifier.

For me that was the case but it depends on what you usually listen to.

Could you clarify what you are asking? Your sentence does not make sense to me.

That's a question you must answer for yourself.

The best way to answer that question is to listen to a system with a properly integrated subwoofer on some demanding music or movie.

Then, listen to the same music or movie again on the same system without the subwoofer.

If you can't tell the difference, or the difference doesn't impress you, then you don't need a subwoofer.

Also by enabling a bass crossover, your loudspeakers do not have to attempt to play very loud bass passages which may overextend the drivers and damage them. (If you've ever driven a rental car.......)

Some people get confused about what a subwoofer actually is for in home theater. They tend to think that it's just there for the explosions or the noisy scenes, but this is not the case at all.

A subwoofer, when setup properly, is the backbone of adding powerful ambience to most scenes in a movie. The actual noise of a rocket taking off will use the sub, but it is the rumble leading up to the rocket taking off that you barely notice building in the room that is what puts you on the edge of your seat.

More subtle is the effect of standing on the bridge of the Titanic or sitting inside of an airplane. There is a low level constant rumble that the subwoofer injects into the room. Barely audible, and not something you really notice... until it isn't there anymore.

My brother asked the same question you did and I took him into a DECENT audio/video store and into a studio with a movie playing and the subwoofer on. It wasn't a loud scene, but I asked if he heard the sub... he said he did not. Then I turned the sub off. His response: "Wow!" He didn't really notice how much the subwoofer added to the impact of what he had been viewing, but the second it was gone - he noticed right away.

Yes, subs take a load off your receiver, yes they can really enhance explosions, but the best subwoofers can deliver high levels of very low bass without distortion or a 'boomy' sound that only enhance almost every moment of every movie you will ever watch. This is why people will spend thousands and thousands of dollars on just the subwoofer(s) in their system, and feel that it is worth every penny.

indeed! if your speakers are run full range, around half the amplifiers power is going to 100Hz and lower (I *think*).

Can't be much worse than some of your responses. Such as this one. The OP's question was a legitimate inquiry obviously mistyped. We all have made similar errors. Sorry for the rant. I think BMXTRIX summed it up nicely. Let's all give HIM a green chicklet.

The fact that he looked over the AH main site where things like this are explained so he could come to the forum and ask a question like this pretty much puts me off of helping him.

This question is worthy of its own topic. Please make sure to include the full model number and hopefully a link to the actual product page for your product. The bottom line answer is most likely 'yes', but you will need to provide more detailed information overall.

Like saying "I have a Chevy, can it go fast?" in a topic about why cars should be able to go fast. ;) Add some details, don't hijack another thread to find your answer. You'll get it!

It looks like you can go with almost any subwoofer that has 'high level' inputs on it. Many active subwoofers have this type of input. Since the Samsung Home Theater In a Box (HTIB) that you list has a dedicated speaker level subwoofer output, this is the way to go.

I would guess though that you will need to cut/splice in a piece of wire since Samsung uses non-industry standard connectors on its HTIB.

I am struggling to recommend an upgraded subwoofer in bottom line entry level home theater setup like this one though. I would say that your money would be better spent (in my opinion) on a complete system upgrade than on just getting a subwoofer, but if you have to watch your money, then get the subwoofer and work on getting a new receiver/speakers ASAP to go with it.
