Subwoofers: HSU STF-2 or SVS PB10-NSD?

Which is better? I am going to be using it in a small room, so I don't think I need anything bigger than those, not to mention I don't really want to spend more then 400 or 500 dollars right now. I will be mostly using them to listen to music, although I do watch movies occasionally. I listen to a lot of Drum and Bass music, so the subwoofer will be undergoing quite a bit of stress.

Another thing: I am going to be hooking this thing up to a bedroom-studio type setup, not a ordinary receiver/amplifier, so the signal coming into the sub will be coming from a 16 channel mixer (ie, from 1/4" jack to RCA jack). Is that ok? That shouldn't make a difference as far as the sound is concerned, correct? Is there anything I should know about this when I am NOT connecting the sub to a "sub-out" connection on a amplifier?

ok I am looking at the specs a little closer now.....

looking at the specs a little closer, and ON PAPER, the SVS should be ever so slightly better. It is using a 300 watt amp whereas the HSU is using a 200. It's heavier and that should control vibration a little more. The extension goes just a tad lower, 20 hertz as opposed to HSU's 25.

However I would still like to hear from you guys. Has anyone heard these things? Which sounds better?

I should also state that size, aesthetics, and weight don't matter at all. Only thing that matters is SOUND.

For the price, the PB-10, especially if D&B is what you like. I owned both at the same time and I also listen to a lot of techno/D&B and the PB-10 handled the lowest stuff with more ease than the VTF-2.

Does the mixer send an already crossed over signal? If not, then the SVS is out of the running as it does not have a built in x-over function. You would have to step up to the 25-31PCi to get that.

The PB-10's extension goes further down then 20Hz. The review at www.hometheaterhifi.com showed 15Hz -5db down from its 20Hz performance(I think it was around 90dB's).

My PB-10 didn't really drop off until 16Hz in my room, but it dropped very steeply after that. The VTF-2 won't impress at 20Hz at all comparatively.

With a small room and music as your primary focus I would go with the Rocket ULW-10. It would be a no contest winner for music IMO. I own it's cousin, the UFW-10, and it's wonderful for music. It fine for HT as long as you are not looking to shake the walls. That's the compromise, better musically, not as good for HT. I also own a Hsu VTF-2. If I wanted to straddle music/HT line I would go with the Hsu STF-2

thanks for the feedback, fellows

Thanks to the J Garcia who pointed out that the PB 10 doesn't have a built-in crossover signal! I just assumed it did and was about to order it. However, the mixer I am hooking it up to doesn't have a output like that. You saved me a lot of hassle, thank you!

I was tempted to get the Rocket ULW 10, however that sub functions best for rooms with a fixed listening position due to that SOS thing (which is a really cool idea, by the way), but I am all over this room, small though it may be. So in the end I decided to purchase the 25-31PCi. I can't wait to get it!

thanks everyone!

I had the STF-2, doesn't satisfy for the lowest bass. It is a good musical performer though.

Shady, just a thought, while I have not heard one, the SVS site says that the 25-31PCi is specially designed for movie LFEs. If you are looking for great music performance, there may be better choices in that price range. Good luck and enjoy whatever way you go.

PS You can buy a ULW-10 for $400 using a link at audioholics if that has any relevance.

25-31PCi should be fine with music as well. It is tuned higher than the PB-10 and PB-12, giving it a little more output higher up. It is clean, but not quite as clean as the HSU VTF-3 IMO.
