I have the Yamaha RX-V2500. When I use the auto-setup feature, I notice that is sets my "SWFR" to "REV" for the Wiring. The other speakers are set to "NRM". However, there are other times that I use the auto-setup and it sets my "SWFR" to "NRM". I do notice that it sets the "SWFR" to "REV" more than it sets it to "NRM" when I use the auto-setup.

Do you know why my receiver would set the "SWFR" to "REV" instead of always setting it to "NRM"?

It's simply adjusting the phase as best it can. Have you noticed to what distance it sets the subwoofer in each instance?

That you get variable results from calibration to calibration is most likely due to small changes in mic positioning. In some rooms, a difference in position of a few inches can make a big difference in measured frequency response.

The distance is always 22 feet. I was also wondering if "REV" vs. "NRM" will have an impact on the sound coming from the sub.

Um, the auto setup isn't always correct. Just set it to "NRM"..

Are you "forcing" that distance setting or is it setting it to that automatically?

No, I am not forcing that distance. That's what the auto set up is coming up with.

Well.................

How does it sound in each instance?

I agree with sivadselim. A slight change in the position of the microphone, or a slight change in your position relative to the microphone, or a change in the placement of items in the room, can make a huge difference in what goes into the microphone, and therefore can change what the receiver "thinks" is best.

I listened to a DVD with some explosions in each phase "NRM" and "REV" and I couldn't tell the differrence. However, after checking the manual, I decided to just set it to "NRM".

I have the RX-V2600 and it also set my subwoofer to "Rev".

Whether it's right or wrong, I'm an A/V newbie and don't know. I can tell you I just finished watching the Matrix 2, and I've never enjoyed the feel of a movie so much.

Well then, that sounds about right. That's the objective!

in-wall vs free standing subwoofer

Any suggestions on whether I should put subwoofer into the wall (the suggested idea from my contractor) vs just buy a free standing one? The in-wall unit is going to cost me 1250$ installed and I was just wandering - do I really need that big of expense when the 500-600$ free standing ones have such a good reviews http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-pcpow2.cfm or http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6462_7-6441425-1.html?tag=prmo1? The primary goal of my Surround Sound Setup is movie watching and the rest of the speakers are coming from here - http://www.preference-audio.com/products.htm for about 2000$ installed into the wall (I am planning on using 7.1 arrangement with new DENON AVR 2807 as soon as it is available).

Well, I moved my subwoofer up a couple of inches closer to my main speakers and that same to change things. I ran through the auto-setup 3 times and every time the receiver set the SWFR to "NRM" every time.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Your contractor is a dolt and you should fire him. ANY SVS sub will destroy an inwall subwoofer.
