Subwoofer size vs. power

I currently use an Axiom EP-175. It's a 10" driver with 175 watts of power.

If I upgraded to a Hsu 10" sub with 200 watts of power, would that make a difference?

Or at this point I should likely go to a 12" with 300 watts?

It really kinda depends on how sensitive the speaker is. If it's the same, then the extra 25 watts won't make a difference. If you want more bass, go with the 12" & 300 watts, if not more.

I think the HSU would be a huge upgrade over the Axiom.
I have been told the lower axiom subs are not very good, no where near the 500 or 600, and I was even recommend by an Axiom employee to "shop around" when it came to the smaller subs.

A bigger sub (12", bigger box, etc.) will generally have lower bass, a bigger amp with generally have more slam (in a similar box)

I think the Hsu's are great values for the money.

The HSU without a doubt. I wouldn't worry about watts, it's the quality of the driver, and the speaker design itself thats so much better. You will hear a big difference between what you have now, and the HSU. What you thought was bass, isn't until you hear the difference the HSU will make to your system. Also look at the SVS subs.

What's your room size . . .

If you call SVS or post the dimensions here we can give you more specific recommendations on subs that will meet your requirements.
If it is in your budget, consider using Axiom's upgrade policy to get the EP500.

It's not so easy to tell from driver size and amp power just how it will sound. You'd need a response chart and that will reveal quite a bit about how it will play. I have not heard good things about Axiom's lower subs either, but I have owned the VTF-2 and it was an excellent sub.

How about starting with a budget and what you're trying to achieve?

To be fair, you can e-mail or talk to Dr. Hsu himself regarding rec's for your room.
