Hi all,

Presently running Anthem 720 A/V receiver with Paradigm speakers:

Monitor Center 3 V7,
Atom Monitor V6 back,
Mini Monitors front and surround,

Old PS-1000 Subwoofer :
Design: Single driver, DCBS™ system with high velocity resistive ports and built-in amplifier
Amplifier: 130 watts RMS,
Low frequency driver: 255 mm,
Low frequency extension: 25 Hz (DIN),
Sub /Sat Phase Alignment: 0 - 180
Low pass filter frequency: 50Hz-150kHz

Is there an added value in changing the Sub?
Is Paradigm Monitor Sub 12 an optimal choice?
Or???
Why?

Many thanks in advance

Assuming you're in Canada, I'd look at SVS subs. Room size will really dictate what sub you need, budget will probably be the limiting factor.

Unfortunately, there is no good answer to your questions without some other information:
How big is your room?
Is the PS-1000 able to give you the bass you want now?
Did you run ARC?
How does it sound?

Your PS1000 has one half the amp power of the Sub 12, and a 10" driver instead of a 12". It would safe to assume the Sub 12 would out-perform it, but do you need it?

Many here will probably recommend a variety of subs to replace it with. If it needs replacing, or if your room needs a 2nd sub because of size or your personal tastes, the Sub 12 is a nice unit. I have a small listening/theater room (1400 cubic feet) which a Sub 8 fills very well.

I don't know if you listen to a lot of music or just watch movies. If music is a priority, your PS1000 sounds fine in your room, and you have money burning a hole in your pocket, I would suggest upgrading the front left and right speakers. Staying in the Paradigm line, perhaps the Prestige 75F's or 15B's. With ARC and all of the speakers running the same X-PAL tweeter, sound integration should be a breeze.

I'm running an MRX520, Prestige 75F's, Monitor Center 1 v7, Surround 1 v7, Sub 8, Oppo 103D, Panamax MR4300, and a Samsung UN555KS8000 4K display. The 75F's and Sub 8 in 2 channel playback are beautiful. Having run ARC several times (at start up and again several months later-with minor differences), the Sub 8 is audibly invisible. All low end material appears to come from the towers. I actually set up an input using just the 75F's so I could switch back and forth to hear the difference with/without the sub because the sound was so seamless in 2.1 playback.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Thank you for your reply, will try the different set ups and re-run ARC.
Attempting to get different Bass colors rather than just booms rocking the room.

Mike, if you're getting a lot of booming from the sub it may need to be moved in the room. You may want to try the "Quick Measure" before you go through the entire calibration. Good luck!

I had a PS1200 that I recently sold basically gave to a co-worker, and still have a CC190 not sure of my versions.

The subs from that time span to the subs of today are literally like night and day....faster, tighter, more powerful.

Without knowing more details it's difficult to know what sub to recommend, but I just added two HSU VTF3mk5 subs...the smaller 15" ported sub and I'm very pleased. SVS, PSA...lot of good sub options out there.

The PS1000 that you have can give you the boom for movies, but it's not quick enough for music.

Love the little Atom monitors btw.

when selecting any brand of subwoofer, is cubic feet of the room, or cubic feet of listening area, the deciding factor? For example 4545 cubic feet is the volume of my apartment, but much less for the main listening area.

It is a large factor in what you're looking for. Smaller/less powerful subs won't be able to fill a large area with higher spl levels that you might be looking for.

Yes. New sub. A good sub that can give you clean bass can make a night and day difference. I replaced my not so great subs with a pair of small subs from SVS. Huge, huge difference. I was shocked at how much it cleaned up the sound quality for my entire system. Now I have a pair Hsu VTF-3 MK5's also and haven't looked back. Good subwoofage is often underrated.

I have had a Paradyne PS1000 , firstly in my only stereo system many years ago before it got upgraded. That equipment got moved to my 5.1 system at that point, and does movies well. It had both Samsung DVD and BluRay players, Samsung 40" LED TV, Denon 5.1 receiver, Mission 761i fronts, 760 center, Radio Shack Minimus surrounds and the PS1000 sub. The bass reproduced in sound effects is adequate in the 16 x 20 room it's in, and I DO NOT use a sub in my main stereo system. Yes, I have heard good ones in audio dealerships, but I prefer my classical music WITHOUT a sub (personal preference). The main stereo system uses Martin Logan original Aerius speakers (same room/different wall to 5.1).
I do have a very inexpensive sub in my garage system, which consists of a Philips CD714 CD player, Technics SA-AX7 receiver, Mission 760i speakers, and, as I said, a ProLinear PLSUB8MKII which works fine to 30 Hz. Below that it basically "flutters" with strong tones from a test disk. As there is very little music below 30Hz on my classical discs, it isn't a problem for me.

From what I've been able to find, the ps1000 needs to go. Iirc it seems like it's a bandpass design and mostly the reason for its boomy, one note wonder, sluggish performance. 25hz is also not good anymore for sub performance(movie).
Finding different colors in bass regions will come with a well controlled linear subwoofer. Even action movies with lots of boom can have many different bass textures that make them more interesting. How big is the room, and do you have a budget? IME with paradigm subs, I've always felt like there was more to bring to the table. I think I saw Canada? Svs is a good option there, and I think I saw Rythmik was offering decent shipping. HSU offers great value as well, but IIrc expensive to ship. Not sure... Funk offers performance and beauty, but will cost more. How expensive a crayon do you want? Lol

Now I'm considering one ELAC S10EQ to replace two DefTech ProSub 800's, any ideas? Thanks!

The S10EQ is probably not bad for a small sub, if that is what you need. If you can handle a larger enclosure size, you can get better performance for the money from larger subs.

The Elac is a good sub for the price -- however, there are better options from HSU -- and for the Budget minded the 12 inch Emotiva BasX S12 inch is good for the $399 price and has more spl over the RSL Speedwoofer 10

Elac S10EQ
S10EQ (blue) Close-miked response, normalized to level @ 80 Hz: lower –3 dB @ 25 Hz, –6 dB @ 23 Hz, upper –3 dB @ 123 Hz when reset to factory default.

Just save for an upgrade. While the elac may be better, it's not much of an upgrade. Going with a proven 12" or larger will yeild better audible results
