Subwoofer Recommendation - Paired with Paradigm Studio 60's

I recently bought a Denon AVR-3805 receiver, a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 towers and a Studio CC-470 center channel. My next purchase is a subwoofer to pair with this system. I’ve heard good things about HSU and SVS but haven’t heard either. I’d also probably take a look at what Paradigm offers. Any recommendations based on personal experience with the above mentioned components?

I use a Hsu vtf2 it goes down to about 25hz and fills my room about 280 sq ft. I've used several different brands of speakers and it (Hsu) always intergrates well. The Hsu by not distorting never brings undue attention to itself. Also I'd suggest considering the size of your room ,how low of freq. you want and the cost in your choice of your sub. Those things may all enter into what brand you select.

I will second the post about the paradigm siesmic 12 but you are paying a premium for the technology (design and parts) of a sub that has a very small footprint. The siesmic 12 will reach to 17hz -3db. Now take a look at the paradigm pw-2200. Much bigger less technology, less power, and way less money. And oh ya, will reach to 18hz -3db. The pw-2200 will shake your fillings out. It is very musical and will pound very hard for ht. So if you have a budget and 1 siesmic 12 never mind 2 is out of your budget, rest assured 1 pw-2200 will be all you will need.

Impressive frequency response, BUT, how loud will it play at 17Hz? This doesn't tell you that and the ability to hear it is what counts :)

I have a Paradigm servo 15 which really fits nicely with just about any speakers. I've used it with my Apogeee Centaur majors, my paradigm titans and my brand new (for video) Paradigm Studio 60's version 3. I heartily recommend it. Proper placement is key to nice, detailed bass so it's worth spending a little extra time getting the sub properly setup.

Good luck,

Subwoofer questions...

I have the Paradigm Studio 100 v3, mated with the cc-470 and adp 470s in a 5.1 configuration, and am using the HSU 1220 sub with the HSU 500 watt power amp. I'm thrilled with the configuration, as it sounds absolutely stunning, and feel certain it would work marvelously with your system, as well. It is extremely musical, and does reproduce extremely low signals, below 20 hz. I purchased the HSU based upon numerous user recommendations and review articles that highly praised the design and build of the HSU products. Plus, Dr. Hsu is available for e-mail correspondence, and will answer any of your questions.

In short, although I love my Paradigms, I highly recommend the HSU products, and recommend that you investigate HSU further.

Good Luck,

Pat Frye

17hz -3db

17hz -3db does tell you how loud. If you are looking at the frequency response curve and where it starts to drop off at the low end, the -3 db point is where the cutoff point is usually stated. Thus 17Hz is 3db lower then stay 60 Hz. Still very auditable.

Hi,
Isn't it also a question of the space your putting it in.
I have an awsome NHT SUB II with 2 10" drivers, 500w Sunfire amp, a separate controller with a plugin for another sub as well a 2 30ft lenghts of proprietary NHT cable.

It's going to tear my wall mounts off in my 10' X 15' room.
I'm putting it up for sale and going with a Definitive Super Cube II not MKII.

It's physically much smaller but capable of hitting the nether regions in Star Wars or The Haunting.

So I guess it's horses for courses so I'm sure the neighbours in my Toronto Condo will be pleased when the NHT is sold.

Sorry, it does not. The frequency response is probably done at a fairly moderate level. The -3 dB point does NOT tell you how loudly it can play at 17 Hz. Is it capable of 110 dB at 17 Hz or 70 dB? We don't know unless someone measures it. Maybe Tom Nousaine or somebody has already done it.

The maximum levels at 20 Hz or lower will not be as high as at 25 or 30 or 50 Hz. Equipment does have limits. Lets say the sub can do a maximum of 110 dB at 50 Hz (which is not so impressive nowadays!): do you seriously think it will also do 110 dB at 20 Hz? My old Paradigm PW-2500 will do 110 dB at 50 Hz, but can't quite break 100 dB at 20 Hz. That's life. For my purposes, this is quite adequate and I feel no real need to get another, more capable sub.
