OK, I need a little help and recomendations from those of you that really know what to get. I was thinking very seriously about getting a SVS PB 10.
I found out today that they ship from Ohio and I live in Ohio so got to ad sales tax on top of a very tight budget. Originally I wanted to stay under $500 but when the wife found out what I was planning to do she was not happy:( So, is there anything out there that will go down as low or very close to a PB 10, and still put out the same volume? I need to lower my price range closer to $400 if not below that. I know I'm asking for a lot, But what performs as well as a SVS PB 10 but for a little less money? Need suggestion from any one who has a good idea. What to get..... oh what to get. If only money grew on trees we would not have these kind of discussions:D

I haven't heard a sub that costs less than the PB-10 (that you don't build yourself) that will equal it, and to be honest there are subs that cost more that don't compare well to it :)

Sounds like a road trip to me...no shipping, just gas and time. Next best bet would be to save a bit more until you can get the PB-10.

Look on craigslist, audiogon or variuos HT forums, sometimes you luck into a deal. One just sold on Polks Flea Market (which is a hookup site for members that sell to each other), 1 yr old, $250. That's lower than I've ever seen them, but I have seen them from $300-350. Also, you can call Erik and put yourself on the B-stock list. You'll have better luck than just using the site.

That S12 from Vann's for $400 is another great deal. It's probably comparable, the numbers are very good. I just can't imagine the PB10 not being a bit better or even a lot better.

you may want to look for the cadence xsub on ubid or ebay. they are around 249 and will sound very nice. they are about 80% of the performance of the PB10-ISD and will fit right into your budget. BTW does the wife do the finances? and if not... the hell with her and spend the 500$ its gunna cost, you 'll be glad you did

Yah, the Mirage S12 will be $399 shipped (half off MSRP) and come very close. It certainly sounds excellent, and in real world terms, be nearly indistinguishable when playing movies or music in a reasonably sized room. The Mirage doesn't lose out any when it comes to good *quality* sound. I heard both and had chosen the Mirage for myself. The PB10 will eek out a few more dB driven at 10% THD.

The Dayton and Cadence subs will be a cheaper option, but most people say they aren't as musical or accurate as the top options like the Mirage, Hsu's or SVS's, even though their specs seem to indicate they should be close. I haven't heard these but these are popular options for those that want to save money.

The X-sub is cheaper, but it isn't in the class of the PB-10. I haven't heard the S12, but it seems like a good next option. It's numbers suggest it will probably come close to the PB-10.

Ron's suggestion of used is a good one. You can usually get more for your money that way, though you may have to look a little harder. Just make sure you ask a lot of questions about the sub when talking to the seller.
