Before we start, this is the equipment that I'm am currently running:

Receiver: Pioneer SX-950
Subwoofer: Sony 250 Watt SA-WX700 running with Paradigm 7se speakers as satellites off the sub, "A" channel.
"B" Channel: Sansui SP-1500

Note: This is NOT a surround-sound system as I am using this setup in the basement for music, not well...as a "theater".

I had bought the subwoofer about 6 months ago and it was definitely a system upgrade, so I was pleased. But yesterday, I decided to turn the balance on the receiver to the the right speakers only, and suddenly the subwoofer was playing louder and brighter then ever, the way the subwoofer is supposed to sound! This is a good thing, but when I turned the balance knob to even, the subwoofer's sound seemed to disappear again. Could it be that the satellites are robbing power to the sub? But basically I'm thinking that I may have a wiring issue somewhere in the system. And I have the subwoofer connected with speaker wire (from the speakers, and to the receiver).

Any ideas? Help would be great thanks!

Perhaps a phase issue?

The only thing I can suggest is to check the speaker wiring with respect to phase.

Basically, that's saying that all the "+" (or red) terminals go to the "+" (or red) terminals all around. Then do the same for the "-" (or black) terminals.

good luck...
