Subwoofer: RCA vs speaker wire

I'm running wires in the walls for my new system. Should I be using RCA into keystone jack faceplates or speaker wire with banana plugs into keystone faceplates?

If I was running cables just for a sub (as your title implies), I'd go with RCA unless you're using a receiver that doesn't have a subwoofer output. That way, the receiver handles the bass management. Either way, be sure to run cables that are rated for in-wall use if your local building codes require it.

If you run speaker wire, be sure to run enough to support wires to and from the sub if you want the sub to handle the bass management, unless the speakers connected to the sub will be near it.

With RCA it's an unbalanced connection. That means it is more and more susceptible to induced noise as the run lengthens. What length runs are you talking about?

This would really depend on how you want to run your subwoofer.

If you want from it from your two speaker-level outputs then you would run a pair of speaker wires.

If, like most people would, you choose to run it from the sub/LFE output, which requires shielded cable, you woud run shielded cable terminated with RCA plugs on the ends.

Is your sub passive or active? Once you determine that you can decide. Most commercial subs are active most diy subs are passive.
