Hi, i have the following speakers Onkyo SKS-HT540 minus the sub. My new sub is the Definitive ProSub800. My problem is after running the auto setup with my Onkyo 606 it sets the Sub to -11db. My sub is 8ft away from the listining position. I did set the volume to half way before running the setup. I was reading how the sub should be louder than the mains like 3db higher.

This what the auto set up:

Front 80hz
Center 80hz
Surround 120hz
Lpf of Lfe 120hz

On the back of the sub i have the crossover all the way up to 140hz.

Any help would be great.

Don't take the configuration that Onkyo provides for you. In my experience, I've always had to go back in after the fact and perform some manual adjustments for the subwoofer.

Invest $50 in SPL

Auto setup is fine as it goes. the -11dB can be manually changed, either by increasing the gain on your AVR or the sub. You can adjust the sound level by ear. Remember this is just a starting point and one reason for the -11 dB on the sub is that the sub is usually self powered and the rest of the gain is coming form the sub amp. so -11 db compared to the other speaker levels is somewhat meaningless.

However, the best way I have found it to get a $50 SPL meter and adjust all of the levels of the speakers equal by using a reference sound level, say 85 dB from the listening position . Then adjust the level of the sub hot by +3db to +10 dB. ( typically higher for explosions, gun shots and other movie rumble and DVD watching, typically lower or flat for music... but it is your preference). Radio Shack dB meter : http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103667

Set you speakers to "small" on your AVR (this acitvates the sub crossover) and set you crossover frequency much lower than 140 Hz --- usuallly somewhere around 80-100 Hz

Good Luck!

You are correct in suggesting that the OP calibrate the sub levels himself. However, that crossover on the sub is exactly where it is supposed to be. That is the sub variable low pass crossover dial on the back. The AVR crossover should be 80Hz as the speakers in that HThiB can all go below 80 Hz.

Allargon , I misread what OP said, you are completely correct thanks for the catch. The sub crossover should be disabled and basically 140 Hz disables it.

Thanks for the catch and feedback.

From your Onkyo manual : http://63.148.251.135/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=TX-SR606_En_A_Rev1.pdf

Sorry for any confusion your Onkyo 606 setup is a little different. On page 72 starts the speaker "Advanced Setup".. You can specify "Full Band"="large" or a crossover setting ="small" of 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 120, 150, 200 Hz for each speaker. for the fronts switching to sub should probably be 80 or 100 Hz. Step 4 set subwoofer=Yes. The LFE filter is a low pass filter that is used to prevent unwanted higher frequencies that could cause hum : you can set it at 80, 90 100 or 120 Hz. You should probably set it to 120 Hz the same as your crossover if you set your crossover lower. This is the highest frequencny that will be sent to the sub output (LFE) Low Frequency Effects. In step 11 (page 740 you could try double bass if you want the bass boosted. You might or might not like it becuase it appears to artifically add additional bass.
