Subwoofer Problem

Recently, I have begun having problems with a low-volume buzzing coming from the Infinity PS-10 sub in my system. The buzzing begins as soon as the sub powers on (LFE input must be connected and send a signal to pull the sub out of standby). The buzzing remains even if the LFE cable is disconnected after the sub comes out of standby.

The fact that the buzzing remains with nothing other than power connected leads me to believe that this is not a ground loop problem. Is this a correct assumption?

The sub worked for a significant period of time (well over a year) before this issue appeared. Is this possibly something that I can do something about or is the sub broken and in need of repair or replacement?

I have tried it plugged into the MonsterPower system that is powering the other equipment (I hate Monster, but it's actually not my equipment, it's my parents), plugged into the same outlet as that system and plugged into two other outlets in the same room.

If you are useing the monster then try a cheater plug on the sub maybe it might help. I hate to say it but if that isn't the problem it could be the amp...

The Sub has a polarized two-prong plug to begin with.

I thought that it might be the receiver or interference on the cable between the receiver and the sub, but the fact that the noise remains when this cable is unplugged (only power plugged into the sub) makes me think that it is the sub that may be broken. I just figured I'd try to get some advice and/or suggestions from people that know what they're talking about before I figure out my repair/replacement options for the sub.

With the sub plugged into the receiver it does function, it just also has this low volume buzzing as well. The weird part (and another thing that makes me think the sub is broken) is that the frequency of this buzz seems much higher than what the sub normally produces. It sounds a lot like noise or static that you would hear with a bad radio signal or static on your TV.

Amp.

That exact problem happened with my old cerwin VE-28S sub, i could have it plugged in anywhere, not connected to system, even on standby it would do it. had it fixed three times and the fourth time got a replacement, which did it 3 months later. it was an amp problem that plauged the model line. they ended up giving me my velodyne, so i ended alot better off. but yeah it sounds like an exact replica of the problems my old sub had.

Static can come from many sources. Have you tried it in a different room?

Thank you very much. It looks like the problem is related to the outlet (actually all the outlets on the same breaker as the other equipment). I brought it upstairs and hooked it up to the system there and it worked fine. I then tried an outlet on a different breaker downstairs using an extension cord and the static disappeared.

Now I just have to figure out what to do about it
