Should the subwoofer and main speakers be precisely in phase at the crossover frequency,
or should the phase be set to pimply provide the smoothest overall bass response?

I guess I'm asking if "proper" blending of subwoofer and mains is a function of phase,
or is it simply based on matching the amplitudes, regardless of phase.

BTW, my subwoofer phase control is continuously variable,
and the measurements are from an RS meter and warble tones with a 1khz 75db reference.
No correction for microphone response has been applied.

Yes, phase is important. In fact, it's one of the most important things amp maker can include on the amp.
