Subwoofer Magnet Dangerous To Computers?

I was reading an article that mentioned a warning from Logitech:

The large magnet powering the subwoofer speaker ... is strong enough to cause some major computer damage if you set it near your computer tower and allow the magnetic fields to erase or completely destroy your hard drives. This warning is no joke.

I have had a BIG sub woofer (from a Creative speaker system) next to my computer for YEARS with no hard disk loss.

Is this warning a real risk? Or can it be safely ignored?

i doubt that there's a creative subwoofer that can damage a PC

If youve had your sub there for years, chances are its fine. I would personally move it though because I wouldn't want to have to deal with the consequences if something does happen lol.

Don't worry about it. For one thing, the speaker keeps most of it's field within the speaker itself. Secondly, the metal cabinet of the PC will shield the guts from what's left of the field. Many PC speakers also have shielding inside the cabinet to keep fields from distorting CRT monitors or TVs

My situation is, I currently have a Creative Gigaworks G500. (5.1 system)

But the wired volume control is WEARING OUT! X_X



So I was looking for a computer-compatible speaker system, that includes a (small if possible) volume control.

The best I found was the Logitech Z-5500. (5.1 system including a wireless AND wired volume control)



But there may be better speaker systems out there!

I'd appreciate any suggestions for a speaker system that has the following:
- Compatibility with a computer (can plug into a sound card)
- Wired (or wireless) remote for volume control
- A 5.1 system would work best (since I don't have much room for extra speakers)
