Audo holics Experts,

We are designing our house for 7.4 speaker system which will have dedicated home theater. Please see the attached picture. Below are details for this:-

1. 9 ft ceiling. Other room dimensions are shown in the picture.
2. 156 inch wide fixed 2.35 aspect ration frame screen
3. Only one line seating for 6 people.
4. Distances of speaker and projectors are based on the good literature available online (thanks to everyone).
5. 7.4 speakers system with Floor standing speakers with sub woofer (shown).
6. Projector is also 2.35 with 16:9 capabilities. Of course HD.

We are planning for 4 subwoofers in media room. I have put 5 options based on the good advice available on audioholic.com and other sources. All details have been provided in the attached pictures. There are 5 pics attached for this. Please advise which one would be the best one for our room layout.

Your expert advise is highly appreciated. Looking forward to hear from you.

Unfortunately there is no good way to guesstimate what unknown subs will do in an unknown environment. I would try the corner option first, and then use the Crawling For Bass article as a guide for optimizing from there.

Make no mistake, INCHES make a difference with subwoofer placement. For this many subs, get an extra person to help push, while the other listens.

As Warrior indicated, best-placement predictions from a floor plan are dicey. Traditionally a corner gets the best results, but I’ve occasionally seen situations where it didn’t.

However, I’d suggest that the “bass crawl” technique is old school in this day and age of cheap room measurement software. It sounds like you’re putting some serious money into this set-up, so you might as well go all the way and do it right. I’d suggest spending an extra $100 or so on a calibrated USB mic from Cross Spectrum Labs. Go to Home Theater Shack and download the free Room EQ Wizard software, and then you’ll be able to take frequency response measurement that will enable you to determine the best locations for your subs.
