Hooked up a sub to a receiver and proceeded to adjust levels. When using the test tone, the sub sounds as it should and levels are matched. Switch to regular listening and the LFE decreases dramatically. I checked all settings including dynamic range. I also hooked up another sub to the same receiver and same thing. Hook the sub up to another receiver and no more issue. What I can't figure out is why would the receiver send appropriate signal to the sub while in the menu using a test tone and not during regular listening? Has anyone encountered this?

go to manual set-up and decreasae sub level.

the automatic setups are not infallible. If it is to loud decrease the dB gain

What's the source of the LFE you are playing? Some receivers have a subwoofer sensitivity setting that allows you to compensate for dvd players that boost the LFE by 10 - 15 dB. If your player doesn't and that setting on the receiver is set to -15 or whatever it could account for the lower level output. Check your dvd player settings too.

The opposite is true. I've had to push the preamp level to max and turn the gain on the sub to 3/4 in order to get bass out of it. If I return to the test tone at these levels, I'd have to run from the room. I've never come across a test tone setup that's so far off.

I have checked all the dvd levels as well. They only apply to the analog out it seems. All other settings seem normal.
