This may be obvious but let me see what you guys think. I am going to purchase a sub for my two channel system. The premap I have is an Adcom GFP-555. It has 2 sets of audio outs: normal and lab. The owners manual says that normal is filtered lab is not. I currently have the power amp (Crown XLS 202) wired to the normal outs, and it drives the tweeeters/midrange (4 x kipsch C2800 ceiling mounted). My question is in wiring the sub. What I think I can do is use a Y connector to joint both channels out of the lab outs on the preamp and run a single line to the line in on the subwoofer. Does this sound reasonable?

no. you can't just join two outputs.

You can take one output and split it to two inputs but you can't join two outputs to one input.

Your best bet is to simply purchase a sub with two inputs. You can then split both your R/L preamp outputs and send one leg back to where it is currently going and the other leg would go to the same relative channel on the sub's line level input.

OK, got it. The sub I have been looking at has R/L inputs, but what I wanted to do was to get away from running 2 cables. I guess I cannot do this unless I have a sub-out on my preamp, which I don't. Thanks
