subwoofer - front mains phase correlation

Is there a simple way to identify if the subwoofer is in phase with the front mains? I have a Homet Theather Essential Test DVD and i dont really understand the phase test explained in that DVD.

The advice I've heard is to listen to some music you're familiar with which has a steady bass content. Adjust the phase control on the subwoofer until you reach a setting where the bass sounds full.
