Subwoofer for a small room

Hi all, after going down each forum, I purchased the yamaha V663 receiver and a pair of AV123 X-Ls speakers and went over budget for both, now I'm at the sub section. From what I have read, subs below $600 just don't hold a candle to those above that price threshold.

My question is, I live in a room about 1000-1200 cubic feet and I live above someone and have neighbors sharing a wall, so I'm definitely not looking to make any enemies. I'm going to grad school soon so I doubt I will have the opportunity to have a space dedicated to A/V and crank up the sound for the next 4-5 years. At that time I figure I can just buy a new sub.

If I don't need a powerful sub to fill a large area and don't plan on turning it up very high, is getting a lesser sub still worth it. From my point of view, a $600+ sub will have to be turned down so low that it would be wasted, so I was looking in the $100-300 range.

I am looking for a sub w/ a tight response for 50% music, 30% games, 20% movies.
Here are my 5 choices:
Cadence cxs-12 ($210 shipped): I heard great things about them and how they made the X-sub 12 for AV123. Reviews for the cxs-12 have all been pretty positive about their bang for buck.

Hsu RTF-2 ($250 shipped): Again I hear and read good things about them and their output for the price as well as just the general quality.

Elemental Designs A2-300 ($350 shipped): Again heard great things about it, but is it too powerful for my needs and requirements? Does it give any edge over the previous 2 to warrant a $100 increase for me.

Velodyne or Daytona 10" sub (~150 shipped): About as cheap as subs can get, is a sub better than nothing?

Stick with X-ls (FREE!): Does these monitors have enough power that any non-quality sub that I add would lessen or not significantly add to the whole listening experience? Thus I should just save up to get a sub 5 years down the road.

Thanks for your input! And please don't tempt me with anything over $400, if I go over budget again, I won't be able to apply to all my schools!!!

STF-1 is very limited in output and extension, at least when I listened to it.

OP, I know you said nothing over $400, but if it was me, Id probably get a transducer instead, like Buttkicker or Earthquake. Install is simple, tactile response will not transmit thru walls.

Heck, my friend's Yamaha HTIB with ultra puny speakers still angers the neighbors with only moderate volumes.

Sure, you are going to be missing some freq w/o a real sub, but your odds of angering neighbors are tremendously reduced, you are going to get much more tactile response than you ever could otherwise (at least at this budget) and you can always add the sub later after you have all that money with the amazing scholarships you land. ;)

OP - Cadence had nothing to do with AV123. Their XSub12 and the AV123 xsub are 2 different animals. That said, the CSX subs are better than the previous XSub12 and should be considered.

So since none of these choices got any ringing endorsements, what do you guys think about a used Hsu VTF-2? Would that fall into the "decent" lowend sub category? or maybe BIC H-100?
