I have an older 10" Optimus subwoofer that for no reason occasionally just starts loudly droning away. No rhyme or reason to it:p. Happens whether or not the system is on, any time of the day or night- woke me up last night doing it. For a while I thought the amplifier might have a problem so I replaced it with a Dayton Audio SPA250 (drop in replacement). Still does it. Has me scratching my head. Might only happen once every week or two. Anyone else ever had this?

Any HAMM radio operators in the area?

I don't believe so. And I have a second sub that doesn't have the problem if that means anything

If the change in amp yields the same problem makes me wonder if your sub is really turning off (if using an auto on/off mode), or perhaps your avr is still on (most are in some sort of standby mode in any case, and some settings can keep it in a higher state of standby....)

I power down my entire system (flatscreen, receiver, and other components) from a power strip when not in use. The only exception being the subs, which are plugged into their own receptacles and left on auto power. Note: all the receptacles are on the same circuit breaker.

Maybe put that sub on the power strip, too?

That would prevent it from happening when I'm away but does nothing to troubleshot the problem and fix it. Once the drone starts the only way to stop it is to shut it off. It can happen at any time- randomly with no trigger that I can see. I usually keep it shut off, but what's the use of having it then?

Just a suggestion since you're shutting off juice to everything else....way I run my sub amps is off a smart strip, when avr's off they're off with no possible way to come on. The change in amps and the problem remaining makes me think a developing issue with the driver and/or wiring inside?
