Subwoofer doesn't work while using the PS3 video gaming system

hey guys, I'm new and I hope I'm posting in the correct area. I recently got a new PS3 and connected it via hdmi cables into my receiver. I have an hdmi cable running from my PS3 to the receiver connected to the BD hdmi port, and an hdmi cable in the HDMI out port on the receiver running to the T.V. I have 5.1 speaks total, 2 front, 1 center, 2 surround speakers and 1 subwoofer. Everything works fine using my FM tuner and Super Nintendo (all 5 speakers and the sub sound great). When I am in the PS3 menu the subwoofer still works, if any of you are familiar with the PS3 when you are in the menu and you highlight the game that you have in the PS3, sometimes a background will appear and music will play for the game. That music works with the subwoofer. when I press "X" to play the game however, subwoofer output goes away and I can only hear sound through the speakers. If anyone is familiar with the PS3 system and how to configure it properly with a 5.1 speaker system any advice would be GREAT. I am using the Sony STR-DH510 multi channel AV receiver. thanks!

Have you tried putting into 2.1 stereo and then playing a game? I know this doesn't fix your problem but it would be interesting to see if the sub played in stereo

The conclusive test is to play a 5.1 DVD or BD. If the sub plays, your setup is good. (I suspect it is correct since the sub plays for FM and in the PS3 menu with the game title highlighted.)

What that means is your game is not sending 5.1 audio and the receive is not setup to send anything other than the .1 track to the sub. Do you have your speakers set to 'Large'?

Used or new PS3? The configurations are different for different models as some can bitstream and others cannot. If the new one, you need to configure audio over HDMI for bitstream. For the older "fat" model, LPCM is your only choice AFAIK. There is also a configuration for different types of audio to output such as DD, DTS, etc, that you put a check next to those formats for them to be output correctly IIRC.

I'm actually at work right now and I read something about setting them from large to small. I'm really not sure how to do that and I will have to read the receiver's instruction manual to find out once I get home

I have a new slim model which does have the option to bitstream (which I tried). I was messing around with the different outputs and trying different combinations but I really wasn't sure what I was doing.

If the sub comes on in the main menu, then it sounds like it is configured correctly, OR you have it set to "both" which will output to the sub and full range (large) to the mains at the same time, which is not an ideal configuration IMO.

I went through the manual and have a few questions.
1. Did you run the Auto Setup?
2. Under Sound Field, do you have Audio Format Direct selected?
3. Can you give details on what you see under Speaker menu? Specifically, Large or Small and Crossover selected.

how could I confirm that it is or isn't set to "both"?
