Subwoofer decision help!

Due to size contraints in the living room, if I'm going to go ported, I need a 10" sub (and yes I need to stick with 1 for the moment). My application would be for more HT, but still some music, so I'd like to be able to get pretty good low end extension and output.

Here is what I've come up with, either the eD A3-250 or HSU's VTF-1. Both seem like very similar subs, but it appears the eD will be able to go lower. Now, am I right in my thinking, or should I consider a sealed application and go with a 12"? Like I said, size is a big issue and both the eD and HSU will work, along with potentially a completed sealed sub.

Thoughts?

Forgot to mention, my living room is 13x20x8; it does open up into the dining room though...

Are you limited just by footprint? If so, have you considered a cylinder sub? That's a decent sized room that you've got there.

Here is where I'm planning on placing it. To keep high WAF, I need to keep everything the way it is; but I'm open for suggestions ;)

Anyways, from the ground up to the lowest point on the end table is 19.75" and it's just under 21" long in between the legs. Width between the legs is just under 11", but it's not like anything will be fitting between there anyways. There's also about 16" to the left back wall from the table and 6" to the right..

I mocked up some cardboard cutouts and the A2-350 fit well by angling it. Also, the VTF-1 would fit nice just under the table.

BTW, is it bad that I'm basing sub size off of these constraints? haha.. Honestly, I'm happy with the bass from my EMP's at the moment, I just want lower end extension that will still pound. Last hope will be ditch the end table and use a beefier, nicer finished sub in its place, but will ultimately yield the lowest WAF. Ahh help!

I've breezed over them. Aren't they more for music though? And, $800 is a bit out of my price range, but what would be the difference between the Rythmik and say eD's A5s-300, which is only $550?

Honestly, I'm blown away by the performance of my tiny little Era Sub8 and they also have a Sub10. For high WAF, the finishes are fantastic. For reference, here's the Sub8 next to my PB12-Plus.

Or measured against a more common article that gives a perspective of it's diminutive size.

Or, what are your guys' opinions about a JL 13W6v2 in a custom sealed enclosure? I'm saying this because I have one in my car right now and it pounds. Would it be ok for HT? And, what type of amp would I need (I couldn't use my MTX amp since it can only take DC)

Too bad they don't make the PB12 Plus/2 anymore - it would make the perfect replacement for that end table. :D

I found a Dayton 1,000W amplifier, Dayton HPSA1000, for $400. I'd have to get that because the sub has dual 4ohm voice coils, so the amp would supply 500W at 8ohm. Unless anyone knows of a 2ohm stable amp for home audio. Then, a Dayton 3cu ft. box would run about $200. I could always sell my old MTX amp which would recoup some costs. But, what do you guys think about that setup with my 13W6v2? For $600, will it work?

A quality speaker (subwoofer included) reproduces the signal sent to it. Music or movies doesn't matter...it should do both equally well. You mentioned sealed (and size limitations) and the Rythmiks have a good reputation so I wanted to make sure you knew about them. That and I didn't know what your budget was/is. The ED isn't as adjustable and the Rythmik will go lower and has Servo technology but if you don't need the bells and whistles the ED is less expensive.

Here is a pic of the SVS PC12-NSD.

It's a very nice looking cylinder sub, just a thought.

The cylindrical sub does take up a lot less floor space, but it's still pretty noticeable. I was hoping to keep this thing tucked away and out of site.

Does anyone have any thoughts if I took my 13W6v2 and put it in a 2cu ft sealed box (what JL recommends). I'd just pop it out of my car but I have a custom box at the moment. What amplifier would work to power it and would it sound good?

I may look more into Rhythmic...

Since we're posting pictures :), here's a reason why I didn't suggest the PC13-Ultra once you mentioned WAF. This is a picture of it next to a B&W ASW1000, which is already probably larger than you want. It's a nice looking cylinder, like Ares said, but it's huge.

With the JL sub the behringer ep2500 would be good power and you would want an eq/crossover unit like the dcx2496 to get the max out of it.
IMO the 15" from Rythmik would be a good value in the 700-900 range depending on amp and finish and at 19x19x20. (even the 12)

Well I still wanted to stick with eD, and I think I found a way to get the A3-300 to work out; unfortunately they are 2-3 weeks behind getting them out. What do you guys think, worth the wait?

Personally I think the 13W6v2 would sound really badass in HT. I have a very similar setup with EP2500 + DCX and it tears my walls down.
After I get my SLP meter I will finally optimize my subwoofer and bookshelf speakers. I feel like I have an untamed lion loose in my room... I need to Siegfried & Roy those suckers into submission.

I will try to find the link to some guys who put 13W6 in HT.

If the WAF is very important and you want to keep your budget at or near $500 then I would recomment staying with the ED A3-300. I have dual A2-300's and I am nothing but impressed. I ran a single A2-300 for about 3 months before adding the 2nd and the single did a very good job, any my room is close to double your size. I have not doubt that the A3-300 will absolute rock the room. If it fits your dimensional needs then place your order and wait the painfull couple of weeks.

Thanks!! It's done... order is placed! 1 A3-300...

Ya know, I was originally thinking the A3-250, but I just wasn't sure I'd be fully happy with it so I figured I better get it right the first time.

Now the dreaded wait... At least I made the decision
