subwoofer connections?

I have a new Onkyo TXSR506 AV receiver. I have a Kenwood SW 305 subwoofer and Kenwood KS-706HT surround speakers. Unfortunately, I do not have the owner's manual for the Kenwood equipment. My question is how to best hook up the subwoofer to the receiver to both get the best sound and the least chance of damage to my new receiver. The receiver has a single RCA style sub out, but the powered subwoofer has left and right input jacks. The right one is also labeled (mono). Would it be better to split the signal and input two wires(left and right into the sub, or just go with one wire from receiver to the right channel(mono) connector on the sub? Would I get the same performance either way. Is one way safer to use as far as protecting the receiver is concerned? Thanks for your opinion.

You could use either way but it really doesn't matter. Lfe out to the mono or lfe in is the typical hookup.

Welcome to the forum!

You can download a PDF file of your Kenwood SW-305 owner's manual here. The connection diagram shows a connection from a receiver's subwoofer output to the "R (MONO)" input on the sub (see page 7 of the manual). It probably wouldn't make much difference to split the subwoofer output from the Onkyo and plug it into both inputs on the sub, but there is no need to do that.

Thanks! I just noticed that the receiver book says to only use speakers with impedence between 6 and 16 ohms. the Kenwood sub is 4 ohms. Problem???

Happy to help!

The 4 ohms for the sub is no problem at all. The sub has its own built-in amplifier, so your receiver is not powering it at all. Don't worry about that one bit.
