Aloha to all!!

I was reading the guides here on Audioholics and I read this:

Connect the "Sub Out" of your Receiver / Preamp Processor using an RCA cable into a Y-cable into the "L" and "R" inputs of your subwoofer. Note: Unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer, be sure to utilize both inputs of the sub as many subs sum the "L" + "R" inputs to yield a 6 dB gain from the input voltage of the processor.

Well I have a YAMAHA RX-V 550 with a set of Wharfedale Diamond 8 speakers. I have a Wharfedale Powercube 10A sub.

I n the VERY SHORT manual that came with the sub it says to connect the "sub out" of the reciever to the LEFT input ONLY of the subwoofer??!!!

Can this be right...and if so...what is the use of the OTHER right input on the sub???

Same problem

I have the same query, except I have a KEF sub and it also shows a diagram just connecting the left plug. Do you suppose this means for these subs there is no advantage in using a Y-connector? I was told by someone that I'd lose about 3dB though by just connecting one.

Either way will work.

If it really, really bothers you, invest four bucks or so at RatShack for a "Y" connector and try it. It won't blow anything up.

On my M&K subwoofer it says to use the left channel for mono input so I guess if you have one sub out from your receiver you have to plug it into the left channel only.

Some receivers have both a left and right sub preout. The yamaha RX-Z9 is one I'm familar with. I'm sure Denon, Rotel, et al have some like that too.

Receivers with R/L sub outs assume the use of two subwoofers for stereo bass. Not that that matters, as most bass is recorded in mono. With the exception of some Classical and Jazz recordings. As well as SACD and DVD Audio.

As for subs stating to use the left only input for mono, MarkW was correct. There won't be a difference using left only or right and left through a Y adaptor. It may be worth trying, as I have had subs in the past gain output even though it stated just the left should be used.??

I did mean to go back and edit my comment with a similar statement, really I did. I just got caught up with a few other things.

I did this and experienced a noticable gain in the output of my Mirage sub. I know of others that have done the same with similar results. But I went ALL OUT and purchased a Monster Y-cable for $12. In the end I was happy with my large investment.
