The AV123 X-sub ($200) is another good budget option. It is only an 8" woofer but will give you quality bass down to 30 Hz. Otherwise, consider saving $4-500 for a 10-12" SVS or HSU sub.
Gotta agree with the majority. I tried doing what you're thinking of trying. I had my Athenas for about a week before I was on here again looking for a new sub. They were able to go lower than the sub, turning it into nothing but a huffing, snorting annoyance.

You're going to need the sub, one way or the other. As far as recommendations go, I'd say jcPanny laid your options out dead on.
As for your budget, whatever it may be, I've found it's very easy to get well over it very quickly. Figure out your top end, what you can and can't live without and then research the heck out of it here. Shop around for your best price then enjoy it for what it is.....until the itch to upgrade comes along!
