subwoofer choice

I am in the process of upgrading my home theater system. After lot of research have bought a SONY LCD 46 inches and have finalised KEf speaker floor standings iQ5 for the fronts and iQ1 for the surround. The AV receiver is onkyo 604. Now I am getting a bit concerned with the budget. For the SUBWOOFER I was thinking of using my old JVC Sub which is from the earlier Home theater system in a box system which I wasa using for the last 5 years.. The sub is pretty okay with 60 watts and anyways I am not looking for a big boom in my apartment. Can I still use my old sub with the new set up.... ??

Any expert tip and advise would help me get a few decent nights of sleep. Iam a audiholic for the last couple of months and am getting a bit addicted to this learning process which is great with lots of good advice.

Kindly assit in making the decision.

how much is your budget for the subwoofer?

I am of the opinion that upgrading your subwoofer from a HTIB to a decent sub will get you the most bang for your buck in upgrades.

That sub probably doesn't even go as low as the towers you just bought.

I don't see why you couldn't use your current sub (although the others make good points about the value of it). What type of input(s) does the sub have? If you let us know that, then we can help you set it up.

I bought an HSU STF-2 for $319, and it plays strong down to 25hz and as loud as my condo can take without falling apart. I watched Superman Returns the other day at about 85db average, and when the ship came over moms house and crashed, I found out that I need to secure some of the stuff on the walls with some anti-vibe tape or something. I used to live in California, and I would say that ship was about a 4.8 or 5.0 on the richter scale.

AV123 X-sub

The AV123 X-sub ($200) is another good budget option. It is only an 8" woofer but will give you quality bass down to 30 Hz. Otherwise, consider saving $4-500 for a 10-12" SVS or HSU sub.

Gotta agree with the majority. I tried doing what you're thinking of trying. I had my Athenas for about a week before I was on here again looking for a new sub. They were able to go lower than the sub, turning it into nothing but a huffing, snorting annoyance. You're going to need the sub, one way or the other. As far as recommendations go, I'd say jcPanny laid your options out dead on.
As for your budget, whatever it may be, I've found it's very easy to get well over it very quickly. Figure out your top end, what you can and can't live without and then research the heck out of it here. Shop around for your best price then enjoy it for what it is.....until the itch to upgrade comes along!
