subwoofer cable question

Hello there,

I just bought a gold-plated subwoofer cable to replace the thin one that came with mine. I just have a question regarding the cable. It's got one end that plugs into my reciever, and then two ends that can plug into my sub (Left and Right). My sub only has one port though. Should I return it for a different cable or will it not affect the sound quality if I leave one one of the Left or Right cables unplugged?

Welcome to the forum.

What subwoofer do you have (make and model)? Most likely, the cable that came with the sub will give you identical output versus a "gold-plated" subwoofer cable. The signal that travels from the receiver to the subwoofer is unamplified, which means you don't need a thicker gauge similar to speaker wire. There's no need to purchase an expensive, beefy subwoofer cable. Do a blind listening test. Use your new cable (leave the one end unhooked), then use the one that came with the sub. See if you and someone else can tell a difference.

I don't know the exact model of my subwoofer, but it's an Onkyo. I bought a 5.1 Onkyo Home Theater Package. Here's a link to the system I have. Mine are black, but its the same exact speakers.

BTW, thanks for the tip. I'll try listening to the sub using both cables and see if I can notice a difference in quality.

Leaving one RCA connector should not affect the sound quality.

One thing to consider though is that you probably paid a little extra for the extra connector and the printing of the word "subwoofer" on the packaging.

Any interconnect can be used as a subwoofer cable.
