Say I have a pair of floor-standers that are rated at 84 db and have limited SPL output. If you add a sub and crossover at 60 to 80 Hz. Wiil the floor-stands be able to play at a higher SPL since they no longer need to play to sounds below the crossover point?

Not really. It will play for what it was designed for. If you put a much higher capacity amp then too it will play only what it was designed for. Push in too much power and the speakers may not be able to handle and they would blow eventually. If you amp was capable of delivering high dynamic currents with peak loads then there will be no difference. If the amp dosen't have the capacity, then if your speakers suck in a lot of power in the low bass regions, then you could see a difference SQ (if the output is getting clipped), now using a sub and crossing over, it will not need to deliver power to the power hungry bass region. So your speakers will play better, but louder...nah.
