Tried and tried to find the article about building a subfloor for better tactile response and cannot find it. Hours have readily passed, my finger is ready to die and mounting levels of frustration are reaching maximum allowable tolerances. Help?

Not sure about an article on the web, but I believe I used one from Home Theater Builder. What I did was lay down 1 layer of roofing tar paper on to the bare concrete (at this point forget why this was important), then I used 2X2 set into Auralex U-boats - this raised the floor and helped isolate it from the concrete. On top of the 2X2 I placed 2 layers of plywood (overlapping) with screws and glue.

Auralex has a good PDF guide here that has a lot of good information on construction techniques, includeing some diagrams of what I jsut described above.

I raised sub-floor in my opinion is the only way to go. In addition to the acoustical properties it adds a layer of isolation between the concrete and the carpet (and feet walking on the carpet). An added bonus, which I did not anticipate was when the basement flooded recently with water. You can see some pictures here.

Other pictures (post clean-up) can be found here.

Good luck and ask lots of questions :D
