Planning to buy JBL SUB 550P to pair with JBL Studio 580s. I am setting up Home Theater room with size 14’x20’. Please advise if it is good. Are there any other better alternatives. Also should I buy only 1 sub or 2 subs?

The Studio 580s are such formidable speakers that I think you will want a better sub than that to do them justice. I would be looking at the large 12"s from manufacture direct sub makers at the very least. In this category, there is the Monoprice Monolith THX 12" Ultra, Outlaw Audio Ultra-X12, Hsu Research VTF-1 mk5, and SVS PB-2000. They will all have a significant extension advantage over the JBL sub. And yes, two subs are a lot better than one.

Yeah, pretty much what shady said. Rythmik makes excellent subs too, and PSA is also worth a look. Also from SVS, consider a PC version. PC2000 pro or PC4000. Big question is how much do you want to spend. The JBL sub would be ok for a starter, or small bedroom, or maybe a computer setup, but any of the aforementioned subs would be better in every way.

Thank you. I am planning spend around $1000 for the SUB(s). Can you please suggest.

2 Hsu VTF-2 MK5s (2 for $1029 + shipping) will do those JBLs justice. You have to factor shipping too (unless you live in Cali), but that doesn't put you too far over budget and you're set for subwoofage.

Well that’s a little tricky. A common recommendation and one I like, is to buy the single most expensive(and hopefully best) one you can afford now and budget for the second one as soon as you can. If this is the case here, then off the top of my head the PC2k https://www.svsound.com/products/pc-2000

and The HSU MK2. http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-15hmk2.html
It’s 849 for St. Patty’s day, and prob the best value around.

If your budget is gonna be capped at 1000 indefinitely, then I think the MK5 dual drive from HSU would be around 1100. I’ll have to dig around a little bit later.

I highly recommend the PC-2000. It's a great sub that I used to own then it drowned in the Sandy storm in my apt.

or buy 2 in the beginning so you only get feedback from your family once. I didn’t say they have a choice, just that they may complain. YMMV :)

Me too, but only if planning to get a 2nd one down the road. I think the dual drive VTF-2 MK5s will go further than a single PC2000.

If you could bump your budget up about $300 you could get a pair of Outlaw x-12 subs. They are fantastic and very powerful. I’m not sure but you should ask for a discount for ordering multiples. Actually I just looked at the combo deals and it’s $1238 for the pair not sure if shipping is included.
I would also look into the HSU VTF2-MK5. They are $539 a piece plus shipping. Also should get a small discount for multiples. You really can’t go wrong with either, both are well designed and reviewed great. Also they are very powerful deep digging 12”subs that would compliment your awesome JBL's fantastic. Imo

I'd pass on the JBL sub too, altho the closeout price isn't bad (its being discontinued), I'd just want more than they offer. I like the idea of the dual Hsu VTF-2 mk5s to stay with your budget.
