Sub Wiring Question

This is first time I bought a higher end sub so I am not too sure about wiring when I looked at the back panel filled with inputs. My sub is the SVS PB12-NSD and receiver is Yamaha RX-V2700. I stopped by CircuitCity and spoke to an audio salesperson there and they recommended me getting a Y-connector which will improve the sound out of the sub. I am just wondering if that is true. Also, I purchased quite a bit of 14-gauge speaker wires and was wondering if it's possible to make a RCA Y-connector myself to hook up to the sub with the speaker wires I have. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

The Y connector will not change the sound. It may help the "auto on" kick in more easily so keep it. Y connectors as so cheap I don't think it's worth you time making one. I use one from Radio Shack. While there pick up a RCA cable of the appropriate length to connect from your receiver to the sub if you have not already done so. I use Radio Shack Gold series. Cheap and decent quality. The Monster stuff is OK quality, but way over priced. There is more info here:

You don't use a "Y" connctor with speaker wires, only with the RCA line level inputs. Go with Nick's suggestion and pick do what he says. And, A "Y" connector shouldn't cost more than a very few dollars.

Forget about that speaker sire with your receiver and that sub. If the salesman recommended it he was out for a quick buck, not your best interests. ...or he was totally ignorant.
