Sub weak link in system?

Hello, I am staring to think my sub isn't performing up to par and letting the rest of my sytem down. It is a velodyne vx10 that I got for next to nothing awhile back. I also wanted to get a new HD-upconverting DVD player soon so now I am torn between the one or the other. You can see my whole system in my sig. I would like something that could play below 25hz and play loud. I live in an apartment, but my neighbors are starting to play their music really loud so I wouldnt mind teaching them a lesson, but sound quality is more important. I only have about $500 to spend so I need something reasonable, if there is any way I could save some of it for the DVD player that would be nice too.

Provided you aren't in Canada, the PB-10 would probably be my choice as well. DEFINITELY goes lower than 25Hz and does it well. If you have a larger room, the PB-10 may not give you really loud though.

The VX is your weak link IMO. I have one as well but paired with the larger more powerfull CHT-10, the VX helps give a kick in the 35-80hz range but I don't think you get much out of it below that. $500 will bring a nice sub and bigger smile.

My room is about 25'x12' with openings into the kitchen and a hall way. Would the PB-10 be too small?

I'd say a PB-10 might be pushing it in that room. Depends on how much bass you are looking for. It was adequate in my 19x20 room, but not WOW bass :) The question is, do you want amazing bass or merely awsome?

Yes, I think the PB10 would be too small for that kind of room size. I think you should look into the SVS cylinder models. They offer greater output for the price. The only issue is the fact that they look like giant catch-scratch posts and can be somewhat tall.

can my wallet handle amazing bass? I know from experience that $500 doesn't go far in the audio world... Anyway I measured the room and its 18' x 11.5' so a little smaller than I thought, but the hall way and kitchen openings are fairly substantial. If the PB-10 is a little weak what is the next logical upgrade. When you got a house full of college students falling down drunk and shaking your pictures right above you, it could be nice to show em who's boss from time to time ;) (yes I know I'm still in college, but damn those kids)

So SVS subs are the only subs really worth considering in the 400-500 range? Just out of curiosity would the PB-10 be a noticeable improvement for me over the Vx10? I just don't think im gonna be sneaking more than 500 past the wife :)

Yes, the PB-10 would be a BIG improvement over your VX-10. It has much more power and much lower extension than your current sub.

Ok, so i figured with the $100 i can get for my current sub, my budget is up around $600 now. I looked around a bit and I think i've decided to get either the SVS 20-39 for $600 before shipping or the Mirage S12 for $400 including shipping. Both say they can go down to 20hz they both have ~300 watt amps and 12in drivers. What do you guys thing i should do?

Big deal. This doesn't mean they will have the best sound. People get too caught-up in the FR spec. That has nothing to do with musical quality. So it may shake the walls a little more in an action movie. Big deal. Most subs will shake the room. Choose a sub because it sounds good. Unless you just want it to shake your nads.

From NHT site:
"In 1992, NHT introduces the SW2Pi. It is the worlds first powered home audio subwoofer. It consisted of a matched SA-2 discrete mono power amplifier and an SW2Si 10" woofer in a high output vented enclosure. The SW2Pi subwoofer system was capable of accurate low frequency reproduction to 27Hz, with high output and low distortion."

Notice the sub in '92 went down to 27Hz, while the one linked only makes it to 31Hz. Certainly they can make it go lower. Why don't they. Sound quality.

25-31 PCi tuned...

My 20-39 PCi does a very good job in a 25x14x8 dedicated HT room. One option you may want to consider is picking up a 25-31PCi from SVS for ~$570.00 that would give you some serious bass (see here). Even bigger, a 20-39PCi for about $50.00 more, both including shipping. Also consider waiting for a B-Stock of one of these or a PB12.

If you wanted deeper extension from the 25-31, you could ask SVS to tune it down to 22Hz or even 20Hz, they should do it for no added cost. This would sacrifice a bit of output/SPL, but at 25Hz, you may be more than happy with its low-end extension without the tuning. If you did decide to have them do this, you'd essentially wind up with a 20-39 PCi for about $50.00 less and it would be a bit smaller than the 20-39. Not drastically smaller, but 8in. shorter, which might help in location placement.

I'd have a hard time believing you wouldn't be satisfied with the output and extension on a 25-31 PCi in native (25hz) or tuned (22hz) mode, these guys do deliver..

So I guess I'll get the 20-39, I can afford it and you guys say it's the best.

I'm quite impressed with both Hsu and SVS. In this budget class, they seem to offer the most bang (rumble?) for the buck. Remember, if you don't like the SVS, you can always send it back. But I seriously doubt that will happen.

Demo..

Granted SVS has an excellent 30 day satisfaction guarantee policy, but if you'd like to hear one before buying, check this link of SVS owners. You can see if there's one in your area an SVS owner may be able to demo for you... -TD
