Ok so the new sub is on its way. Im going to grab an SPL meter and do things right. Now the question becomes......

What is some good test material for setting up my sub? I don't know that I need any pipe organ stuff but I would like to get something that will test the operating ranges of my sub and help me find the best placement. Maybe the organ stuff is the way to go, I have no clue. Obviously I will listen to my preferred music to check it but I know theres some really good bass tracks out there that I don't have.:)

So lets hear the short list of best music to let your sub flex its muscle!:D

For setting up and calibrating your sub with an SPL meter, I would recommend using a set of test tones (such as on this CD from AV123 - it's what I use).

Now, for enjoying your sub, people here will probably have plenty of good music suggestions!

I was planning on using the test tones that my receiver puts out with the SPL meter. I guess I wasnt really specific. For example you want to use test tones when doing a sub crawl aswell then? For some reason I just got the idea that you would prefer something musical when using your own ears for placement.

The SPL meter will tell you much more than your ears can in terms of level setting. Yes, use the receiver's tones and write down the measurements from the various locations you are considering for the sub. You are looking for the best SPL readings, though you might also consider doing it with a range of tones rather than just a test tone - different locations will give you different readings at different frequencies. It isn't impossible to do by ear, but your ear can be fooled much more easily than the meter.

Once your sub is level matched, try the 1812 Overture on Telarc:D Digitally recorded period cannons that blew out windows when the recording was made:D

The most accurate way to setup your sub is with an SPL meter and a program called REW (room eq wizard) Its free to download and simple to use. it will allow you to take in room measurememnts of your systems response and you can adjust from there.
