Sub/Subs for this room?

k, I'm currently completing all the final peices to my HT, and now i'm on the Audio, This room which my HT is going in is 20 X 26 feet, i'm currently looking into a couple different receivers/speakers, but i'd like recomendations on a sub to purchase, this is a fairly large room, but i would really like the sub to still THUMP in here, for music, movies, etc. i'm big on Bass

with that said, I have a budget of about 600$ for a sub or subs, since i'm not really sure which receiver i'm getting I guess it's best to recomend powered subs for now, all help is very much appreciated!

I see dual subwoofers in your future. You'll end up spending more than $600 to fill that room in the end but its always nice to set a budget.

Hey there,

Nice room. Mark is right, it's a big space to fill, and you probably won't make it on $600. I'd also agree that SVS has a great reputation for their subs as well as their customer service. I doubt you'd go wrong there.

That said, have you considered DIY? An LLT or and IB will give you a great bang for the buck, with bass to spare. You could make an IB to rock that room for somewhere between $600 and $1000 if you play it right.

Use large cinema professional speakers for that room I mean its larger than Empire 3 at Leicester square and that seats around 70.

You’ll need a single 15” bass mid and horn for LCR matching! And a few 18” subs to really pack a punch a true cinema sound!

You’ll need at least six or eight surrounds for sidewalls and rear wall, I’m not kidding that room needs JBL professional the sound of the west coast to reinforce that room it’s large!

Plus you’ll need separate amplifiers to run this, and its best with an electronic active loudspeaker management crossover system. Oh that is a large room.

i've actually done some DIY subs in the past for home and mobile audio, but i'm somewhat scared to do it with my HT even with a guide..

but yea, as u guys have clearly laied out, it's gonna take alot to shake that room..

LOL a lot well I guess you haven’t been to the Empire in London then! You’ll need the above speakers that would do it and if you shop around for them you might just end up with a thunderously slamming abyssal low end crushing quacking almighty home cinema. I wish I had a room that size.

Yes most of these guys are nuts around here. I am one of the more level headed guys.

I too recommend SVS. My guess is they are going to recommend the PB12-Plus/2 or the new PB13-Ultra.

ED has had some issues recently; understandable since they are a new company. I cannot recommend using them until they get those issues straightened out though.

The only issue I have heard of is wait time since the build them when ordered so it does take longer but for the money I an not sure he can do better unless he goes the diy route.

Wait time and lack of customer support when a user has issues. Those are two big things in my book. I can live with wait time for delivery, but not with a support issue.

SVS and HSU have proven track records.

From HSU, the VTF-3 Mk3 should also do the trick.

that VTF-3 Mk3 also looks tempting...does anyone have any opinions on it? I like that it's specifically recomended for "huge rooms"

I also am one of those nuts... and don't believe that one single plus will cut it in that size room... But thats just my opinion....

You could easily go DIY and build dual subs that will trounce on the subs mentioned for $1000.00 or maybe a touch more....

I have a 8200cuft room, and have a SVS Plus/2 and a Plus, and Im looking for more... SVS subs are great both in looks and SQ.

BUT..while i'm running a 5.1 setup with a receiver with 7 X 110W, i wont be able to power those subs with that receiver will I? i will need a seperate amp???

thats when it becomes wayy over my budget, I am very handy, and have all the tools and resources to build boxes [as i've built them before for car subs] but i really dont think i can afford to go with a non-powered option

Warp has kind-of lost his mind when it comes to subs. Just get the biggest SVS or HSU that you can afford and be happy!

Cylinder subs offer very similar performance to box subs. I am of the opinion that one of these subs will be enough to get you going and not destroy the budget. It there is some flex in the budget, move up to the Plus cylinder. It gives you options, too. You may find the Plus is perfectly suited to your tastes and if not, add a second Plus. After all, we're not talking here about whether you'll be able to hear an explosion, we're talking about the degree of mayhem and destruction it will take until you are satisfied.
