Sub squelches on startup.

Squelch is the best word I could come up with. A vocabulary would be such a luxury. Anyway, after I turn the receiver on it takes a few seconds before the noise begins. Kind of sounds like a pig squeal and it ends with a soft thunk. It only lasts for a second.

Now that I think of it, it only does that after it's been off for a while. Once it has squelched I can tun it on and off without getting the noise. Almost like it charge up.

The sub is a lightly used 2 year old PS10. Other than the startup noise I think it works fine. I'm pretty sure it's still under warranty but finding the receipt is going to be tough. I am looking for a little insight and possibly a solution.

Most likely capacitor charging noise in the sub amp. But, you can check this next time by turning it on last, well after, 30 sec or longer, the receiver is on.

Okay. I even sort of know what that is. Sort of. It shouldn't do that , should it? I'm thinking a diode is suppose to keep it from loosing charge or something. Consider me out of my depth. I can check that in the A.M. and let's say it doesn't make the noise so then we know it's capacitor charging noise. Then what? Repairs? My girl thinks that noise is hilarious. Like my sub is here to amuse her. Where would I go to have that done? I have to look for the receipt.

If the noise is not there is the sub is turned on last, then you have to get used to that sequence:D And, turn the sub off first.
I am not positive this is the problem but that is what it seems to be.
If the receiver doing it, nothing to do but the sequence of what is turned on when. If the sub is still doing it, then a call to the sub maker?

Normally I never use the on/off switch in the back of the sub. The sub stays on and it automatically goes into stand-by when the volume is low or no signal is present. This squelch business started a couple of months back so I don't think I'm suppose to get use to it.

Just now I had the system off for over an hour. I turned the sub on last and it squelched. This just won't do.

A call to the sub maker, Infinity, was a fantastic suggestion. After about a 20 minute wait the representative gave me a service authorization # and a location of a authorized repair facility. The guy was good enough to do all this without a receipt. He just took me at my word which is good because for the life of me I can't find a receipt. Their speakers are warrantied for 5 years and their amps for 3. Thanks for the tip.

I have an Infinity PS12 and it does the exact same thing. Nothing to worry about.:)

Not harmful, just annoying:D Especially when others don't do it.

That is great. Hope that will indeed solve your problem.

Come back and let us know the outcome.
Another poster was helped by a ground isolator in his cable TV lines and solved his problem; another similar issue wasn't helped. So, it is good to know what works when. :D

I'll happily post solutions. I read a post today where the poster was thanking you for that tip. As a matter of fact I stuck the site in my "favorites" just in case. http://www.cencom94.com/gpage.html8.html right? How about that little amplifier? I saw a bunch of them on eBay but was sort of embarressed to ask about them. You ever see that Turkey of the Year thing? It is funny but more so when it's not happening to me.

BJC has something they call an Isolation Transformer for around $15. Same thing? I'm not going to put up with any sqelching from my sub. It is under warranty and I'm being presented with a chance to have them make it right. BTW it was a floor model. Now that I think about it nothing good could have happened to it on that sales floor.

Solution

The repair shop just told me that they had to order a resistor and a diode. It's been a month since I dropped it off. At this point they have already taken too long and the resistor and diode line sounds kind of like an excuse. I guess the bright side is that it's getting fixed and it's free but a month to get parts? C'mon.

That is a surprise. I didn't think anyone troubleshoots to this level anymore and just replaces whole boards, the largest assembly.:D Curious.

I find it curios too. This shop really is impressive in the assortment of electronics they have waiting to be fixed. They don't seem to be organizational geniuses though. Paper work gets lost and 2 weeks turns into a month. Infinity sent me to them and maybe Infinity handles there warranty work one diode at a time. The shop might have lost the paper work and left the sub sitting until I called a month later only to feed me the diode and resistor line. Infinity needs to be concerned about who they allow to do their warranty work. If it's going to take a 6 weeks then say 6 weeks. I'm irked. At this point they are 2 weeks late and I suspect they are full of diode and resistor balogna. So much for the great effort made by Infinity to inspire brand loyalty.
