Sub sounds like a tuner fart can exhaust

I connected a sub i picked up with a busted amp to a 7 y.o. receiver to see how it tests out; it's a dayton 12" (sub-120). instead of being punchy or tight, it sounds like a fart can (like something is vibrating like a B). is this a result of the amp being inadequate for the sub or the sub itself being on the way out (to the trash)?

thanks, Dan

It could be a number of things. First take out the driver. See if there is anything loose inside the box. Then inspect and test the driver. Play it from another amp and see if it sounds clean. If the driver is damaged order up the parts and rebuild it. That will be good experience for you. I can talk you through it.
