Sub Setup Help: HSU VTF-1

Just received my new HSU VTF-1 sub.

I used HK's EzSet/EQ automatic setup, but I'm not so sure I trust it. For whatever reason it put my center channel as "large." I thought it was supposed to go the other way. It put the left and right crossover setting at 80Hz, which sounds good, and my surrounds the same--although I think the surrounds sound a bit better at 100Hz being so small.

The sub was put in a "present" mode. The other manual option would be to set it as a 10" sub. I couldn't really tell the difference between the two settings.

My receiver also allows me to set the decibel level for each channel. The automatic setup placed the sub at the lowest level, while the other speakers were more in the middle. Should I be adjusting the db level for the sub on the receiver, or use the sub volume knob to adjust my preferences? And what level should I put this at? I guess whatever sounds best.

This is my first sub so I'm completely new to the setup. I think I understand crossover settings due to this forum, but I'm not sure how to optimize this thing.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi tyreal,

You should definitely manually override the setting for your front center channel, and set it to 'Small' with 80Hz crossover.

For the subwoofer amp, set the volume knob to ~ 9-10 o'clock (just barely above 1/4 of the way up), set crossover switch to 'Out', the On/Off/Auto switch to 'Auto', and the bass extension switch appropriately to whether there is 1 port open or 2 ports open on the back of the sub. Then, start with subwoofer channel level on the receiver at +0db. Moving forward, to get louder or softer bass, simply adjust the subwoofer channel level on the receiver in 1db increments.

Sincerely,

Just wanted to give an update after using the suggested optimization techniques...

Sub sounds amazing! Movies are tight, deep, and earth shattering. I'm really happy with the purchase. Very clean sound.

What surprised me was how good this thing is for music. I'm going through a music renaissance now...
