Sub recommendations for a 2 channel analog system please

Hello everyone :^)) I'm an overall hi-fi newb looking for your advice on which subwoofer to put in my 2 channel music system (which is still in the process of being pieced together). Here's a breakdown of all the relevant info, I think:

-Location: Canada, with no possibility of driving to the USA to shop.
-Budget: $2000 CAD.
-Room: Sealed, 20.5 x 12.5 x 8 feet. Floors are wood, uncarpeted.
-Receiver: Vintage stereo receiver, so there's no dedicated subwoofer out. I was planning on using the pre out instead.
-Source: Turntable.
-Speakers: 2 x 2-way monitors. They have 7" woofers and bass extension down to 45 hz.
-Music: A little bit of everything, with some emphases on piano solo, piano concerto, organ solo, indie rock and pop, R&B, and blues ensembles. Though I really do listen to everything except the heaviest of heavy metal.
-Floorspace: The less floorspace it uses, the better. I don't care about the height of the cabinet.
-Aesthetics: I don't care as long as it's not hideous. Durability is more important to me.

So there you have it :^)) In terms of the sound I'm looking for, I don't think it's any different from what most people desire: good articulation, extension, and accuracy.

Oh yeah... I don't listen to music at head-splitting volumes, so high output is not important. However, I do think I'll need good quality output at <20 Hz, for certain music.

And something related: Do you think I'd need some sort of crossover module between my receiver and the speakers/subwoofer?

Thanks

For the best possible integration and sound quality, yes.

As for recommendations; a JL Audio F110 would definitely be something to look into.

Seriously, I have no life.
There are a number of companies that would meet your needs, with Hsu and SVS being a couple more to consider.

as no5 mentioned jl is a nice option, martin logan would be another. Both a very tight and not boomy.

Nice looking sub. I like the front control panel. I wish all subs had that. But (I may be wrong) it doesn't seem to be available yet, and its extension is limited to 25 Hz. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Hsu... I'll check them out, thanks. I have an SVS PB13-Ultra in my home theatre, and I couldn't be happier with its performance (it's kind of funny how it completely outshines the rest of my components, in price and quality). But, for the sake of variety, I don't want to get another PB13. I may get another SVS though, maybe a cylinder model.

Check out a Rel R-505 or either of it's smaller brothers, the R-305 or the R-205. Rel subs were designed just for this application. They connect and get their signal from your speaker outputs on the rear of your amplifer. They also have a LFE .1 RCA input, too for HT use.

The R-505 retails for $1995 USD.

hands down the SVS PB13 Ultra (big footprint) or PC13 Ultra (16" diameter footprint)

Variety i snot a good reason to get something you are not familiar with.:D

If that PB13 is performing well for you and you need another setup, why not get a known quantity?

For a music application look at Vandersteen, music is what this company is all about. Subs that are good for movies are seldom good for music, the are slow and bloated BTW I own a HSU Research and love it for movies but musically its a bit slow and can at times be produce one not bass meaning it isnt fast enough to keep up with fast musical bass applications but my main speakers go down to 16HZ so I dont use it for music.

Hi guys, thanks for your suggestions. But I'm sorry to say that I wasted all of your time, because I've decided to go in a different direction and build my own sealed subwoofer :^))))) Building stuff is completely new to me, but I can't explain it, I've been feeling adventurous the past couple of days! I just hope the feeling doesn't pass...

Anyway, for the curious, I plan on making a sealed, passive subwoofer using a single Acoupower 18" driver, which I read about in another forum. This should be fun.

Congrats on your DIY choice and good luck with it, going with sealed is the best way to get the fast, tight bass for music.
