Looking for a sub for my parents. Room is hardwood with vaulted ceilings. Living Room is like 14x16 but all open on one side to the kitchen so really like 14x26. Budget is like 300. Mainly for music 80% and some movies 20%.
My parents aren't audiophiles at all and I just want to provide them with something decent.
I was looking into HSU stf 1 $299
BIC $198

That is a good choice because of your budget...
I would stretch the budget to $349 and get the stf2...

I honestly think for around $300 the cv ve-28s, I belive is the number it has 2 8" woofers, they are around $300 {amazon has them cheap} and they sonud really good with music as long as its not super bass-y rap, which I dont think your parents will be frequenting... Its a nice sub... I have one, in my garage with a pair of cv ve-5m bookshelfs and they sound awesome together... I want to say I paid $400 for the 2 bookshelfs and the sub, very worth the price, but the sub holds its own for sure..

I was curious as to whether an 8 inch sub would be big enough for this room. I will probably bring over my stf1 and see how it sounds.

I think the 8" is gonna be to small. I'm with ImcLoud, go for the STF-2! :D

Well in that budget nothing will get you room filling bass, but odds are if they are 80% music you don't need that. You only need to fill out the low end with usable, clean accurate bass, which an 8" should be able to do.

I don't know what you're parents are crossing from, but the great thing about the M8 is how high you can cross it. It's only down 3db at 250Hz, plus in room with corner loading and it should be enough.

Appreciate all the ideas. They originally wanted a Bose system which I talked them out of. Before I buy the sub I'm gonna try my sub to make sure I don't get too much interference due to lack of shielding then buy the sub.

I will try it first. They have Polk owm5. We decided on those because they didn't want anything big or on stands. They didn't want in wall. They wanted something mounted on the wall. My parents were more about the aesthetics. They wanted something that looked great on the wall w the LED TV, was small and put out great sound. You can't have everything!

This is good idea. If your parents like the STF1, let them keep it and get yourself a new sub. :D
When I bought the stf1 my wife still hasnt noticed its a differ sub than the old one. Guess I should tell her I bought a new one!

I got it all hooked up for them tonight. I brought my HSU stf 1 over for them to borrow. It sounds good but the 8 inch driver is way too small for that large of a room. I had to crank up the sub to 2 o'clock position.
Do you think the dayton sub 1000 would fill it any better than the stf1?
They are not audioholics at all.
I was also looking at the 12 inch acoustech h100 for 279$.

Got the dayton sub 1000 in today. Hooked it up. First impression the auto button on the sub didn't seem to work. I had to leave it on which I read on some reviews. I was not impressed by the sound at all. My little HSU 8 inch did a much better job. Even my parents who this is for said yours sounded so much clearer and precise. I guess the mistake I made was letting them use my HSU because they got to hear it first and compared the dayton to that. I toldthemthey could return the dayton and get the stf 2. The problem is they want little footprint and big sound for low cost. Told them you can't have allof them
