One question for you guys with RX-V1400/2400 -- When does your sub come on while listening to music? I just bought my first sub, a Velodyne DLS-3500, and it doesn't play at any level in Yamaha's "Direct" mode, only in the DSP modes. Does this amp only power those two channels and not the sub line out in this mode? I checked the manual and can't find anything that refers to direct mode and sub operation...

Xant,

One of the crappiest features in these new Yamahas is that the sub turns off duing direct mode, keep your main speakers to LARGE and BOTH and leave your direct settings to off.

I just reread the manual and found that stated in the small print. WTF? That means that to use that cool mode where I get all the power stored in that little baby to drive 2 speakers cleanly, they couldn't figure out a way to drop line level (.01w) to signal a sub (on a HT focuded product where they HAD to know that there was a strong likelyhood that a sat/sub setup whould be used!!!)???
HMM... Can I cheat and run a set of leads from the "B" side to the subwoofer, or are those not driven during direct mode, either?

Carumba. - Thanks,
Xant

This limitation is not unique to Yamaha. The idea is that 'direct' sends the signal directly to the amplifier section, bypassing all a/d conversions, dsp, and tone controls. The analog signal would have to be converted to digital to apply bass managment and route the bass to the subwoofer, thus it would no longer be direct.

Use the stereo mode, that should use the subwoofer.

Have you tried stereo mode (assuming your receiver has that)? My Onk will play in 2.1 mode (mains only plus sub-woofer) only if stereo mode is selected. Direct bypasses the .1 feature.
