Sub Placement: Pic Attached

Okay, I'm trying to determine where to place my sub. I've attached a crude .gif file for reference. The room is akward--nearly square 18' x 18'6", with a vaulted ceiling. All opening's noted are exactly that, openings--no doors (except for the french doors on the right.

Please note the fireplace in the corner rattles like crazy....I've already had the sub at location 'C' (which sounded great) but the rattle is unbearable. I've tried placing the sub at my listening location and crawling and have ended up at location 'A'. However, I want everyone's take.

My system's as follows:
HK AVR635
Klipsch RF-25 towers
Klipsch RC-25 center
Klipsch RS-25 surrounds
Mirage Omni S12 subwoofer

Thanks in advance!:D

Guess what I just ordered today........ that's right, I ordered a S12 like you have. How do you like it and how long have you had it? What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses of it? What did you have before this one and how does the S12 compare? What made you buy this one over all the others out there? OK, now for my input on your posting. I like position "D" but you should place it in all the locations to see what sounds the best. Can you do anything to dampen the rattling of the fireplace? Hope this helps.

I'll be honest with you, this thing rocks...Granted, I haven't played any movies on it yet---only listened to music as I've just moved into a house an am still in the process of setting up my in-wall wiring/plates etc. I haven't seen any weaknesses yet, unless you consider it shaking everything a weakness...LOL. I've played it loud and haven't had any distortion what so ever. I hope you're as impressed with your's as I am. Later, B

I like D.

Give us a review once you've got it all setup! :)

I was thinking D or maybe under the table in between A and B so it's hidden.....if you're pretty handy, you could take the panels off the front of the fireplace and put some dynamat on them...even a big glop of silicone caulking will do a decent job of getting rid of the rattling....if it's the doors rattling, tighten up the hinges, and then get some felt circles and glue them to the corners of the glass...that should help quite a bit....kinda ugly though....

I'd probably stick with "D" just because the wires are easy to hide and the sound should be good. If there was a way to test "E" it might have a good balance. I'd just be afraid the sub would be in the way and the cables require special attention.

D does look like the best or maybe by the chair on the FP side.

D would probably be my choice as well, with C a not so close second place. F and G probably won't give you good response.

Okay, it seems like 'D' is the opinion of the majority. I've tried running it at 'D' but I really don't get as much room gain there ('boom' for lack of a better word). I also haven't moved my formal entertainment center in yet, I just have my TV on a stand. Will a larger formal cabinet for the TV help with response?

The sub is currently sitting at position 'A' and seems to have good response...but a bit boomy.

Oh yeah, all of my cables thus far are run through the walls; I'll do the same with the sub cable. So cable routing isn't an issue.

Will I have to worry about Dynamat and the heat? Also, my fireplace doesn't have glass doors--it has the metal hanging chains (Which are going to quickly be removed and tossed).

Any other recommendations?

It's tough for us to say without actually hearing it. What you might consider doing is placing the sub in a few of these spots and running some numbers with an SPL meter. You'll get less reinforcement from it being along a wall rather than in a corner, but often you get flatter response too. H might be an option as well. I would expect you to get worse response putting the sub inside a cabinet, so D would be out then.

No, No, when I say cabinet I mean a large entertainment center (spot for 36" TV and a full size equipment rack in one). I wasn't considering putting the sub inside of a cabinet. Sorry for the confusion.

BTW, where's the cheapest place to pick up a decent SPL meter?

The Radio Shack analog SPL meter is what a lot of people use. It works but needs manual offset of readings in the lower part of the scale.
