i started a thread on this way back in the day.
I have a Boston PV1000 sub with the preout from yamaha receiver. All my speakers are powered by Emotiva amp.
The sub is incredible when watching 5.1 dvds such as LOTR or other movies. however when watching TV the output is so low. For example i have the crossover at 80, DB level at +3 and the sub dial at 11 o'clock. My cable is comcast analogue and not digital so not sure if that makes a difference. In order to get anything out of the sub during watiching TV I have to crank the dial on the sub nearly all the way to max, other than that the sub just sits their quiet when watching TV.

I noticed the sub is 4 ohm, should i change my reciever to 4 ohm since my speakers are powered by emotiva or just add an svs when i get into my new house??? the thing that gets me is that the thing rumbles like thunder when watching movies on dvd but sucks when watching tv.

The problem is with Comcast. Analog TV signals have never been Hi Fi. They will be gone for good next February. Obviously there is no content in the sub range from the signal you are receiving form Comcast.

Thanks TLS, I do have comcast and you are right there is a very very low signal for LFE coming in, I play dvd sources and have to have sub dial at about 3 and the sub rocks. I watch comcast and the signal is so low the sub barely moves I have to crank it up to about 12 the max setting and barely get a signal. thanks for your help.
What will be happening in Feb.

On February 9 2009 all TV broadcasting has to be digital, analog is shut off by Federal law.

test tone

the thing that gets me is that when i run the test tone i can hear the test tone in each speaker, I get to the sub test tone and i hear nothing until i turn the volume on my yammy up to -35 db, i cant figure out why the output is so low even with test tones even when turning up the db level on the sub.

Only digital sources have a discrete LFE channel. You must have your receiver set to only send the LFE channel to the sub. Go to your speaker set up menu and set it so the sub will receive all bass below 80 Hz or set your speakers to full and have the sub get a portion of the bass below 80 Hz and the LFE channel. I don't have a Yamaha receiver, so you will need to consult your manual. But obviously your speaker set up is not the way you want it. You will have a lot of options!

thats what it seems like, the sub is receiving only LFE sig and not the bass below 80. i have the receiver Xover set to 80 and bass set to SUB.
i looked through the manual but i dont see anything in yamaha manual talking about a setting to let the bass below 80 get to the sub.
I have the tone control for bass set to BYPASS (auto).

LFE always goes to the sub unless you set subwoofer = No and have the front speakers set to Large (most receivers will automatically set the fronts to Large if you indicate sub = No/Off).

Any channel set to Small will have the bass below the xover sent to the sub - that is the definition of bass management for a receiver.

thanks, i knew that. i have all my speakers set to small already and bass set to to sub. just seems my sub is only receiving LFE signals from dvds only.

leave receiver at 8 ohms.

Leave the setting at 8 ohms on your receiver. You are just supplying pre-out from receiver to your LPA-1 which can easily handle 4 ohms. When you change the setting on a receiver you are in effect bridging a 4 ohm in parallell with the speaker impedance and reducing the speaker output power. Changing a receiver from 8 ohm to 4 ohm is to protect the AVR not to provide better sound for 4 ohm speakers; in fact it does just the opposite !.

Sorry about your lack of output from Comcast. I am not a fan of cable and satellite or fiber optics provides a significant PQ improvement. However, since you have Comcast, does you Comcast has 5.1 or HDMI audio connections. Can you upgrade your Comcast receiver to one that does. One other consideration, but since DVD plays okay pprobably not thep roblem, do you have your front speakers set as samll and have a crossover sepcificed so that lower Hz audio will go to sub ?

yes i do have one
Pleas play it on your system and let us know what happens. If you are set up correctly then there should be a seamless splice to the sub below your set crossover point.

I ran the pink noise from the test DVD i have. seamless across all speakers then when i get to the sub it is a very low rumble that can be heard when i turn the volume up to -40 db on yamaha. i guess i have to get an spl meter to read what what the sub is outputing during the pink noise.
