hi guys-

got an odd problem that I cant figure out. Onkyo TX-SR702: When I play a movie on my dvd player, I get sound out of my sub. When I play a music CD on my dvd player, I get nothing out of my sub.

When I play a ripped dvd on xbox media center (great for demos) I get sound out of my sub. When I play music on xbox media center, I get nothing out of my sub.

I cant for the life of me figure out why. Ive gone thru all the menus but im sure im missing something.

Can anyone shed some light?

thanks

It sounds like your subwoofer is only getting the LFE channel. If you'd like it to get a part of the low frequency output from every channel, set your speakers to small and pick an appropriate crossover frequency.

hi nav, thanks for the response-

ive currently got the speakers to small and the xover at 80. after doing some playing, i discovered that while playing music from xbmc, if i turn the level of the sub all the way up (on the rec) i can hear a little bass.

of course i wouldnt want to do this after spending all the time calibrating the speakers with the avia dvd and sound meter.

i can understand if its some type of SQ problem given that its a mp3, but what i still dont get is very very low volume from cd from dvd player.

any other suggestions?

Set your receiver to Double bass. A reveiver can send a discrete LFE signal to a sub from DVD like in a 5.1 were the .1 is the LFE. You must adjust to double bass to get it to matrix the lower frequencies and send them to the sub from 2 channel sources like MP3's and CD's. I have had two Onkyo receivers that both had the double bass feature, so yours probably does to. It is also shown as this LFE: MAIN. Yours is set to LFE ONLY. If you need help setting it, refer to the owners manual. If you do not have the manual, here is the link to the PDF manual list at Onkyo:
